PART 3 — The Camera They Forgot

Forty minutes later...

My mother had transformed from offended...

To furious.

She accused Emily of manipulating me.

Claimed postpartum hormones had made her "dramatic."

Insisted she'd sacrificed everything for our family.

Then...

She made one mistake.

"If you don't believe me," she snapped, "check the cameras!"

Emily looked confused.

"Cameras?"

I nodded slowly.

I'd installed indoor security cameras months earlier.

Originally...

They were for burglary protection.

I'd almost forgotten they existed.

Almost.

I opened the security app on my phone.

The living room television lit up.

Monday.

Tuesday.

Wednesday.

Thursday.

Five days.

Hundreds of clips.

Nobody said a word.

Video after video played.

Emily carrying Leo while cooking.

Emily washing dishes one-handed.

Emily sleeping in a chair because Leo couldn't breathe lying down.

Meanwhile...

My mother watched television.

My sister filmed dance videos in the dining room.

Not once...

Not once...

Did either of them feed Leo.

Change him.

Hold him.

Comfort him.

Then another clip appeared.

Emily sat at the kitchen table crying quietly while trying to eat a piece of toast.

My mother walked over.

Took the plate away.

"You can eat after dinner is ready."

Emily whispered,

"I haven't eaten since yesterday."

My mother's answer froze everyone.

"Being a mother means making sacrifices."

Silence swallowed the room.

Even my sister's face turned white.

Emily hadn't shown me any of this.

She'd protected them.

Because she didn't want to damage my relationship with my family.

That realization hurt more than anything I saw on the screen.

I turned the television off.

"I'm done."

Three simple words.

There was nothing left to discuss.
