Chapter 11 - THE THIRD PERSON
Nothing else was missing.
Not jewelry.
Not computers.
Not cash.
Only the blue folder.
Someone knew exactly what mattered.
Keller reviewed camera footage.
The intruder wore a hood.
Average height.
Gloves.
No visible face.
But they made one mistake.
They drove away past a neighbor’s doorbell camera.
The vehicle belonged to Harbor Ridge.
Not Michael.
Not Vanessa.
The company’s chief legal officer.
Gregory Shaw.
I had known Greg for fifteen years.
He handled mergers.
Litigation.
Compliance.
And Rachel’s crash settlement.
My chest tightened.
He had been the person who helped me deal with insurance after her death.
The person who told me not to torture myself reading reports.
The person who introduced me to the grief counselor who later encouraged me to “move forward.”
Maybe none of that had been accidental.
Police searched Gregory’s office.
He was gone.
His assistant said he had left suddenly after receiving a call.
His computer had been wiped.
But Rachel’s notebook contained one entry we had overlooked.
G.S. knows about Doyle.
Gregory Shaw.
Keller requested old phone records.
The night Rachel died, Gregory called Lieutenant Doyle six times.
Then Michael twice.
Then Vanessa once.
He had coordinated the cleanup.
Michael committed the murder.
Vanessa helped cover it.
Gregory made the lie official.
Police traced his company car to a parking garage downtown.
The car was empty.
The blue folder sat on the passenger seat.
Several pages had been removed.
Which pages?
The ones showing payments to shell companies Greg had approved.
He wasn’t protecting Michael anymore.
He was protecting himself.
Then a call came into Keller’s office.
Gregory wanted immunity.
He would testify against Michael, Vanessa, and Doyle.
The prosecutor refused full immunity.
Gregory threatened to disappear.
Keller answered.
“Then disappear.”
Gregory called back ten minutes later.
He accepted partial cooperation terms.
His testimony changed the case again.
According to Gregory, Michael had not planned Rachel’s murder.
But he had planned to destroy her credibility.
They prepared fake financial records suggesting Rachel had embezzled from Harbor Ridge.
If she went public, they would accuse her first.
Rachel discovered the forged evidence.
That was why she became afraid.
She knew Michael was no longer simply stealing.
He was constructing a version of reality where she became the criminal.
Gregory also revealed something about me.
Michael had intended to remove me from Harbor Ridge after Rachel’s death.
But Dad refused.
So Michael found another method.
Vanessa.
She was supposed to influence me.
Keep me away from company books.
Encourage me to sell my shares.
And eventually convince me to sign voting control to Michael.
I remembered the papers Vanessa had asked me to sign three months earlier.
She called them estate planning documents.
I never finished them.
If I had, Michael would have controlled eighty percent of Harbor Ridge.
