Chapter 2 — The Wedding That Never Happened

No one moved.
The ballroom had become so quiet that the crystal chandeliers seemed louder than the people beneath them.
Rachel stared at Daniel as though she no longer recognized the man standing in front of her.
"What are you doing?" she whispered, forcing a smile that had already begun to crack.
"Put the microphone down."
Daniel didn't.
He looked at the guests instead.
At his parents.
At Rachel's parents.
At the pastor waiting silently beside the altar.
Then he looked down at Chloe, whose tiny hand still clung to his.
"I need everyone here to understand exactly why this wedding is over."
Rachel laughed nervously.
"Oh my God... seriously?"
"She's eight years old."
"She misunderstood."
A few uneasy chuckles came from her side of the family.
Daniel slowly unfolded Chloe's letter.
His voice stayed steady.
"My daughter spent the last forty minutes locked inside an upstairs bathroom."
No one breathed.
"She wasn't hiding."
"She wasn't playing."
"She wasn't sick."
He looked directly at Rachel.
"She was told she would ruin your wedding."
Rachel immediately interrupted.
"I never said ruin."
"I said she might become emotional."
"I just wanted everything to go smoothly."
Daniel nodded.
"You locked a child in a bathroom."
"I gave her somewhere quiet."
"You isolated her."
"I protected our ceremony."
"You protected your image."
The words landed harder than shouting ever could.
Rachel's maid of honor stepped forward.
"It wasn't that serious."
"It was only until after the vows."
Daniel looked at her.
"So if someone locked your daughter in a room because she didn't match the photographs..."
"...would that still not be serious?"
The woman had no answer.
Then someone unexpected spoke.
Rachel's mother.
"You've embarrassed our entire family."
Daniel smiled sadly.
"No."
"Rachel embarrassed herself."
He held up the letter.
"My daughter wrote this because she wanted to welcome Rachel into our family."
He swallowed.
"And Rachel's response was to erase her."
Every eye slowly shifted toward Chloe.
The little girl lowered her head.
Daniel immediately knelt beside her.
"You have nothing to be ashamed of."
She whispered,
"I didn't mean to make everybody mad."
His heart broke all over again.
"You didn't."
"The adults did."
He stood.
Looked at the pastor.
"I'm sorry."
"There won't be a wedding today."
The pastor quietly closed his Bible.
"I understand."
Rachel gasped.
"You can't cancel everything!"
"We spent hundreds of thousands of dollars!"
Daniel nodded.
"And I'd spend twice that if it means protecting my daughter."
Then he took Chloe's hand.
Together...
they walked out.
Leaving the flowers.
May you like
Leaving the music.
Leaving Rachel standing alone beneath the altar she had cared about more than the family she was supposed to join.
