Chapter 12 - EMILY’S TESTIMONY

Emily pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and falsifying expense records.

Her cooperation reduced the possible sentence.

At Thomas’s trial, she described how he recruited her.

She was twenty-eight.

Ambitious.

Buried beneath student debt.

Thomas promised partnership access.

He introduced her to me during a client dinner.

He knew I was dissatisfied at home because I had complained about Clara’s pregnancy.

That confession became public.

I had described the woman carrying my child as distant.

Tired.

Obsessed with medical appointments.

I presented her fear as inconvenience.

Emily said Thomas encouraged the affair.

“A partner who needs secrecy is a partner who signs quickly.”

The courtroom became silent.

Thomas taught Emily to submit personal charges beneath legitimate client expenses.

At first, she hesitated.

Then I approved them.

My approval made misconduct look normal.

The relationship and fraud grew together.

Emily looked toward me from the witness stand.

“I thought Daniel loved me.”

The prosecutor asked:

“Did that belief influence your actions?”

“Yes.”

“Did it remove your ability to understand invoices were false?”

“No.”

The distinction mattered.

Emily had been manipulated.

She also participated.

I had been manipulated by Thomas.

I also lied, stole marital funds, and ignored obvious warnings.

Victimhood in one relationship did not create innocence in another.

After court, Emily approached under attorney supervision.

“Clara must hate me.”

“She is not required to organize her life around you.”

Emily looked down.

“I was cruel in the hallway.”

“You asked why I was staring at the cleaning lady.”

“I didn’t know.”

“You knew she was my pregnant wife somewhere in the city.”

“I believed she left.”

“You chose not to verify.”

She nodded.

“So did you.”

“Yes.”

There was nothing else to say.

Emily later received three years in federal prison.

Thomas received twenty-eight.

Asset seizures restored part of the investors’ money.

The firm created a compensation fund.

I surrendered my retirement account, investment portfolio, and share of several properties to restitution.
