Chapter 2: The Basement That Never Existed

The collective gasp echoed through the foyer as Alejandro stopped only inches away from Vivian.

He didn't touch her.

Instead, he reached past her shoulder and calmly opened the front door.

Four armed private security officers entered.

Behind them came two attorneys and the head of Castillo Global Security.

Vivian blinked.

"What is this?"

Alejandro's voice was frighteningly calm.

"This is the moment your lies end."

He turned toward the servants.

"No one leaves this house."

Every servant froze.

Most lowered their heads.

One elderly gardener suddenly burst into tears.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Castillo... We wanted to help her... but Miss Moretti said if we spoke, we'd disappear just like the last driver."

Alejandro's stomach tightened.

"The last driver?"

The old man nodded.

"He tried to call the police."

Alejandro looked at Vivian.

She still tried to smile.

"They're lying."

But her confidence had begun to crack.

His security chief approached.

"Sir... there's something else."

He handed Alejandro a stack of maintenance records.

Every invoice listed one location repeatedly.

Sub-Basement Level B.

Alejandro frowned.

"There is no basement on the blueprints."

"There wasn't supposed to be."

The security chief swallowed.

"But the renovations were approved while you were overseas."

Alejandro slowly turned toward Vivian.

"What did you build beneath my house?"

For the first time...

Vivian didn't answer.

The steel door required both a fingerprint and a hidden code.

It took less than five minutes for Alejandro's team to force it open.

Cold air rushed into the hallway.

The smell hit everyone first.

Bleach.

Mold.

Loneliness.

The lights flickered on one by one.

Tiny rooms lined both sides of the corridor.

Locks were mounted outside every door.

Inside one room sat a rusted metal bed.

Another contained shelves filled with medication.

The third...

Made Alejandro stop breathing.

The walls were covered with calendars.

Every single day for three years had been crossed out.

Hundreds of tiny scratches.

One mark...

One day.

Elena stood frozen beside him.

Her knees nearly gave out.

"I made those."

Her whisper shattered the silence.

"I counted every sunrise..."

Alejandro gently wrapped an arm around her.

"You never stopped believing I'd come."

She looked at him with broken eyes.

"I almost did."

Near the bed lay a worn leather notebook.

Alejandro picked it up carefully.

The first page read:

If you ever find this... please don't blame yourself. She made me believe you stopped looking.

His hands shook.

Vivian had stolen more than Elena's freedom.

She had stolen her hope.

As investigators photographed every room, one officer called out.

"Sir... you need to see this."

Hidden inside a cabinet were dozens of passports.

Different names.

Different faces.

One face appeared again and again.

Vivian Moretti.

Different hair.

Different ages.

Different identities.

Alejandro stared in disbelief.

She hadn't simply imprisoned Elena.

She had spent years becoming someone else whenever necessary.

His attorney whispered one sentence that changed everything.

"This isn't kidnapping."

He looked toward Vivian.

May you like

"This is organized human trafficking."

The foyer upstairs became deadly silent.
