Chapter 14 - THE DINNER RECEIPT

The king crab receipt became more important than anyone expected.

At first, it was only proof of cruelty.

A $612 dinner paid through Gertrude’s additional card while Skylar ate instant soup.

Then Rebecca noticed the timestamp.

6:14 p.m.

That same evening, at 6:32 p.m., the additional card had been used for another charge.

$1,850.

The merchant name was not a restaurant.

It was a mobile notary service.

I felt a chill.

Rebecca contacted the company.

The notary remembered the appointment because something had felt strange.

The signer was supposed to be Charlotte Mercer.

But the woman who appeared claimed she had forgotten her wallet.

The notary refused to proceed without identification.

Gertrude became angry.

Hailey offered a photograph of my license.

Still refused.

Eventually they canceled.

That explained why the closing had not happened earlier.

They needed another path.

The next morning, they had planned to bring someone connected to the financing company who was willing to accept remote verification.

Freezing the cards had interrupted more than dinner.

It had disrupted the final attempt to authenticate my forged signature.

The timing became crucial.

Investigators now had proof that Gertrude and Hailey actively tried to arrange notarization using my identity.

Then the restaurant provided security footage.

Rebecca had not expected much.

Neither had I.

But the family had spent nearly three hours there before taking the food back to my house.

The footage showed Gertrude opening a folder at the table.

Hailey photographed documents.

Brandon signed something.

Most shocking of all, one of the people dining with them for twenty minutes was a man I recognized from the home-equity lender.

A contract broker named Alan Pierce.

The broker who had processed my fraudulent application.

When confronted by his employer, Alan claimed he believed I had authorized everything.

The restaurant video told a different story.

At one point, Hailey held up my driver’s-license photograph beside her face.

Everyone laughed.

Alan laughed too.

There was no audio.

There did not need to be.

He knew Hailey was not me.

Suddenly this was no longer only a family scheme.

A professional had helped them.

The lender suspended him immediately.

Financial-crimes investigators became involved.

And for the first time, Gertrude seemed to understand that she could not shout her way out.

She called me from an unknown number.

I answered only because Rebecca was recording with my consent under the legal advice she had given me.

Gertrude did not say hello.

“You have made a terrible mistake.”

I almost smiled.

“You’ve said that before.”

“You think these people care about you?”

“I don’t need them to care about me.”

My voice was steady.

“I need them to read.”

Her breathing changed.

“You are tearing Skylar’s family apart.”

“No.”

“You did that when you taught her she deserved less food than the adults spending her mother’s money.”

“That little girl has been filling your head with nonsense.”

I went cold.

“Do not talk about my daughter.”

“She will regret this when her father loses everything.”

And there it was again.

The child carrying the consequences of adults.

I said quietly, “Brandon already lost me.”

Gertrude fell silent.

Then she whispered:

“You think this ends with Brandon?”

I waited.

“You have no idea whose name is on the last account.”

The call ended.

Ten minutes later, Rebecca found it.

The final account did not belong to Brandon.

It did not belong to Hailey.

May you like

It did not belong to Gertrude.

It was opened under Skylar’s Social Security number.
