"I Publicly Humiliated a Waitress for Spilling Drinks on My Husband. Then He Saw the Photo in Her Apron."

The Broken Crest
The banquet hall, once filled with clinking silverware and low murmurs, fell into a suffocating silence. Richard’s hands trembled so violently that the crumpled photograph nearly slipped from his fingers.
His wife, Eleanor, scoffed, adjusting her diamond necklace. "Richard, please. Don’t tell me you’re falling for a dramatic act. She spilled champagne all over my gown!"
But Richard wasn’t listening. His eyes were locked on the faded, worn image of a newborn wrapped in a heavy, ivory wool blanket. In the corner of the fabric, stitched with intricate gold thread, was a crest—a roaring lion entwined with a silver rose. It was the crest of the Vance family. His family. A crest that had been retired thirty years ago after a tragedy that tore his life apart.
He looked up at the young waitress, whose nametag read 'Maya'. Her tear-stained face, stripped of pride, held a striking familiarity he had been too blind to notice earlier.
"Where did you get this?" Richard’s voice was barely a whisper, thick with sudden emotion.
Maya wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand, trying to maintain her dignity despite her stained uniform. "It’s the only thing I have left of my biological mother. She passed away in a free clinic when I was just a toddler. The nurses said she wrapped me in that blanket and hid this photo in my baby clothes before she died. I’ve carried it every day, hoping… hoping someone would recognize it."
Eleanor laughed nervously, sensing the shift in the room's energy. "This is ridiculous. It’s a coincidence. She probably found it in a thrift store!"

"Shut up, Eleanor!" Richard snapped, his voice echoing off the marble walls. It was the first time he had ever raised his voice at her. He turned back to Maya, his eyes glassy. "The woman in the photo… did they tell you her name?"
Maya swallowed hard. "They told me her name was Clara."
