CHAPTER 2 — THE MAN WHO STOOD UP

The room stopped breathing.
Crystal glasses froze halfway to waiting lips. Conversations died mid-sentence. Even the violin quartet in the corner faltered as if the musicians had forgotten the next note.
Ethan placed both hands firmly on the wheelchair's armrests.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
He rose to his feet.
Not with dramatic effort.
Not miraculously.
Simply... standing.
The gray blanket slid from his legs and pooled silently on the polished marble floor.
For a heartbeat, nobody moved.
Vanessa stared at him, her mouth slightly open.
"...No."
Her voice barely escaped.
"No... that's impossible."
Ethan straightened the sleeves of his tuxedo as though standing after weeks in a wheelchair were the most ordinary thing in the world.
"I believe," he said calmly, "the word you're looking for is surprise."
The ballroom exploded.
"What the hell?"
"He can walk!"
"Was the accident fake?"
"My God..."
His uncle nearly dropped his champagne.
His business partners exchanged nervous glances.
The same people who had watched Vanessa humiliate him minutes earlier now looked desperate to smile.
Ethan noticed every single face.
He memorized them.
His lawyer stepped forward and quietly handed him the leather folder.
"The board documents are ready, Mr. Carter."
Ethan nodded.
"Perfect timing."
Vanessa finally found her voice.
"You lied to me!"
He looked at her without emotion.
"No."
"I remained silent."
"There's a difference."
She stepped closer, forcing a laugh.
"Oh, come on, Ethan."
"You were testing people?"
"That's childish."
"No," he answered.
"It was expensive."
The ballroom became quiet again.
"My accident happened exactly as reported."
"I simply recovered much faster than anyone expected."
"But I asked my doctors to keep my condition confidential."
"I wanted one answer."
He slowly turned toward the guests.
"Who loved me..."
"...and who loved my money."
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone suddenly knew the answer.
Then Ethan opened the folder.
"I'd like to thank everyone who attended tonight."
"Especially those who revealed exactly who they are."

The first page contained a list of names.
Vanessa's was at the very top.
