Chapter 5 — The Vote

The boardroom was so quiet that the faint hum of the air conditioner sounded deafening.

Daniel remained standing at the head of the polished walnut table, his prepared speech forgotten.

For years, he had walked into this room believing he was the smartest man present.

Today, he wasn't even the most respected.

Frank Holloway, chairman of the board, adjusted his glasses.

"Let's begin."

No one objected.

Daniel cleared his throat.

"I'd like to address what happened last night."

Frank nodded.

"You may."

Daniel took a slow breath.

"My wife wasn't forced to do anything."

Several board members exchanged skeptical glances.

"Emily enjoys taking care of our home."

Linda remained expressionless.

Daniel continued.

"The situation was taken out of context."

Richard Evans leaned forward.

"Did your wife spend the evening serving guests while eight months pregnant?"

Daniel hesitated.

"...Yes."

"Was she standing barefoot in a wet kitchen?"

"...Yes."

"Did you tell her to move faster?"

Silence.

Daniel knew every person in the room already knew the answer.

"...Yes."

Richard folded his hands.

"Then I fail to see what was taken out of context."

The room fell silent again.

Daniel's confidence began slipping away.

Miles across town...

Emily sat beside the hospital window watching the rain slide down the glass.

A nurse entered carrying breakfast.

"Good morning."

Emily smiled politely.

The nurse hesitated before setting down the tray.

"I hope you don't mind me saying..."

Emily looked up.

"My husband and I saw what happened online."

Emily's stomach tightened.

"Online?"

The nurse nodded carefully.

"Someone from the neighborhood recorded part of the dinner."

Emily closed her eyes.

Of course they had.

In today's world...

Privacy disappeared the moment someone reached for a phone.

The nurse quickly added,

"The comments aren't against you."

Emily looked confused.

"They're defending you."

She handed Emily her phone.

A local news page had shared the story.

Thousands of comments flooded beneath it.

"No pregnant woman deserves this."

"Those investors did the right thing."

"If that's how he treats his wife in public, imagine what happens in private."

Emily's hands began to shake.

For years she had believed everyone would blame her.

Instead...

Complete strangers saw the truth she had hidden from herself.

Back at Carter Technologies...

Frank placed a thin folder in front of every board member.

"This morning's agenda includes one item."

He looked directly at Daniel.

"A vote regarding your position as Chief Executive Officer."

Daniel stared.

"This is insane."

Frank remained calm.

"No."

"It's governance."

Daniel turned desperately toward Linda.

"You planned this."

Linda met his eyes.

"I planned nothing."

"You created this."

"No."

Her voice remained steady.

"You created it."

She paused.

"I simply refused to hide it."

Marianne burst through the boardroom doors without knocking.

"This meeting is over!"

Every head turned.

Frank stood immediately.

"Mrs. Carter, this is a private session."

"I'm Daniel's mother."

"And I'm informing all of you that my son is being attacked."

Richard sighed.

"Please leave."

"I will not."

She pointed directly at Linda.

"This woman has poisoned everyone against my family."

Linda slowly stood.

"No."

Marianne glared.

"You've always envied Daniel."

Linda almost smiled.

"I rarely think about Daniel."

The words landed harder than an insult.

Marianne blinked.

"What?"

"I think about Emily."

Linda's voice grew softer.

"And my grandchild."

She looked around the room.

"My daughter nearly collapsed because she was trying to earn kindness that should have been given freely."

No one interrupted.

Linda continued.

"I didn't come here to destroy a company."

"I came because my daughter stopped believing she deserved compassion."

Her eyes settled on Daniel.

"And no mother can watch that happen."

Daniel lowered his head.

For the first time in years...

He remembered the woman Emily used to be.

She laughed while cooking.

She painted on weekends.

She loved thunderstorms.

She danced barefoot in the kitchen when music played.

Little by little...

Those things disappeared.

He had noticed.

He simply hadn't cared enough to ask why.

Frank called the meeting to order.

"Board members."

He distributed electronic voting devices.

"You know the motion."

Daniel looked around the table.

Some faces avoided his eyes.

Others looked disappointed.

None looked confident.

Frank spoke clearly.

"Motion."

"Should Daniel Carter remain Chief Executive Officer of Carter Technologies?"

The room became perfectly still.

One by one...

Lights appeared on the screen.

Votes were being cast.

Daniel couldn't breathe.

He watched the numbers climb.

Yes...

No...

No...

No...

Yes...

No...

The final result appeared.

YES — 3

NO — 8

Motion Passed.

Daniel Carter was removed as CEO.

No applause followed.

Only silence.

Frank stood.

"Effective immediately."

Daniel stared blankly at the screen.

"This company..."

"I built it."

Richard answered quietly.

"No."

"You led it."

"There's a difference."

Security entered a moment later.

Not aggressively.

Respectfully.

One guard approached Daniel.

"Sir..."

"We'll escort you to collect your personal belongings."

Daniel looked around the boardroom one last time.

His office.

His company.

His future.

Gone.

Not because of one disastrous dinner.

But because years of arrogance had finally become impossible to ignore.

As he walked toward the door, his phone vibrated.

He almost ignored it.

Then he saw the caller.

St. Catherine Medical Center

His heart skipped.

He answered immediately.

"This is Daniel."

The voice on the other end was calm.

"Mr. Carter?"

"Yes."

"I'm calling regarding your wife."

Daniel's entire body tensed.

"What happened?"

There was a brief pause.

"Mrs. Carter is asking whether she would like you listed as her emergency contact..."

Another pause.

"...or whether she'd prefer someone else."

For the first time that day...

Daniel realized there was one position no board could vote him back into.

May you like

Husband.

And he had just begun to lose that, too.
