Chapter 3: The Heir They Tried to Erase

Daniel stumbled as if the floor had tilted beneath him.

“No,” he said.

But his voice had no strength.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

For once, she had no insult ready. No command. No polished lie.

Julia watched her husband break apart and felt nothing but a cold, exhausted emptiness.

All those years, Evelyn had called Julia unworthy.

All those dinners where she had corrected Julia’s clothes, her voice, her family, her education.

All that pride.

And underneath it was rot.

Rachel placed another document on the table.

“Judge Richard Vance secretly fathered Daniel while Evelyn was still married to Henry Vance’s brother. The family covered it up to protect Richard’s judicial career.”

The nurse stepped back, stunned.

The security guard quietly radioed for hospital administration and police.

Evelyn opened her eyes.

“You think this changes anything?” she said.

Julia looked at her.

“It changes everything.”

Evelyn pointed at the babies.

“Those children carry the Vance name.”

“No,” Julia said. “They carry mine.”

Daniel looked at her quickly.

“Julia—”

She cut him off.

“You don’t get to say my name like you still belong in my life.”

His face twisted.

“I was scared.”

“You were a husband,” Julia said. “You were supposed to be stronger than your fear.”

For a moment, only the twins’ soft cries filled the room.

Then the door opened again.

Two police officers entered with the hospital administrator.

Evelyn immediately transformed.

“This is a private family matter,” she said.

The older officer glanced at the adoption papers on the floor.

“Not anymore.”

Rachel handed him copies of the forged documents, the recording, and the hospital footage.

Evelyn turned to Daniel.

“Tell them Julia attacked me.”

Daniel looked at his mother.

Then at Julia.

Then at the bassinets.

For the first time that day, shame seemed to reach him.

“No,” he whispered.

Evelyn froze.

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“She didn’t attack anyone.”

Julia stared at him.

It did not save him.

But it told the truth.

“My mother brought the papers,” Daniel said. “She told me if Julia refused, we would say she was unstable.”

Evelyn slapped him.

The sound cracked through the room.

But Daniel did not move.

Police stepped forward.

“Evelyn Vance,” one officer said, “you need to come with us.”

Evelyn’s eyes burned with hate.

She looked past everyone and fixed her gaze on Julia.

“You think you won?”

Julia slowly pulled both bassinets close again.

“No,” she said. “I think my children are safe.”

Evelyn smiled.

It was small.

Cruel.

Almost victorious.

“Safe?” she whispered. “From me, maybe.”

Julia’s blood went cold.

May you like

Then Evelyn leaned closer as the officers took her arms.

“You still don’t know what Daniel signed.”
