Chapter 5 - FOUR INSURANCE POLICIES

The policies had been issued through a private broker in Nevada.

Each insured one child for five million dollars.

The medical forms claimed the girls suffered from inherited heart conditions.

They did not.

My digital signature appeared on every page.

I had never seen them.

Vanessa did not plan only to control the children’s trust.

She had assigned a financial value to their deaths.

I immediately contacted federal investigators.

The insurance broker attempted to destroy his records.

Agents arrested him before he reached the airport.

He admitted Nathan arranged the policies.

Vanessa supplied medical information and samples taken from the girls.

The broker claimed he believed I approved everything.

The forged authorization looked perfect.

That perfection had a source.

Caldwell Systems specialized in identity security, biometric verification, and financial authentication.

Nathan controlled the internal development team.

He used my own technology to reproduce my signature and voice.

He could create audio calls that sounded like me.

He could authorize transfers through a digital version of my face.

The fraud spread beyond insurance.

My accountants discovered more than eighty million dollars missing from corporate reserve accounts.

The money passed through companies controlled by Nathan and Vanessa.

Some of it paid for the Christmas party.

Some purchased the diamonds around Vanessa’s neck.

Some financed a private estate in Switzerland.

The rest remained unaccounted for.

The company board met at noon.

Nathan entered the conference room wearing a dark suit and an expression of brotherly concern.

I joined by secure video from the hospital.

He addressed the directors first.

“My brother has suffered an unimaginable family crisis.”

“His judgment is compromised.”

“I believe he needs time away.”

I waited until he finished.

Then I displayed the insurance documents.

Nathan’s expression changed for less than a second.

The board members began reading.

“These are fabricated,” he said.

“Yes.”

I looked directly at him.

“By you.”

He laughed.

“Jonathan, you need help.”

I played the mansion footage.

The board watched Nathan remove documents from my safe.

They heard him discussing my plane.

They heard Vanessa ask whether the crash would destroy enough evidence.

Nathan remained still until the video ended.

Then he leaned back.

“You obtained those recordings illegally.”

One director looked at him in disbelief.

“That is your response?”

Nathan closed his laptop.

“This meeting is over.”

Security officers entered the boardroom.

Nathan’s personal guards blocked them.

For several seconds, the headquarters nearly became a battlefield.

Then federal agents appeared from the executive elevator.

Nathan escaped through a private stairwell.

His car left the underground garage before police sealed the exits.

The company’s tracking system located the vehicle near the mountain road.

It was abandoned.

Inside were two passports, a handgun, and a child’s pink winter coat.

I recognized the coat.

It belonged to Sophie.

I called the hospital.

Three daughters were safe.

Sophie was gone.

A nurse had taken her for imaging twenty minutes earlier.

The woman was not a hospital employee.

Hannah Doyle had returned.
