Chapter 11 The Witness

The hospital room fell into stunned silence.

The shattered syringe lay on the floor, its clear liquid slowly spreading across the white tile.

A hazmat technician rushed in moments later.

"No one touch it."

Detective Sarah Collins kept one knee pressed against the woman disguised as a nurse while another officer secured her wrists with handcuffs.

The woman didn't struggle.

She simply smiled.

It wasn't the smile of someone who had failed.

It was the smile of someone who expected to succeed eventually.

Emma couldn't understand it.

Collins searched the woman's pockets.

No identification.

No wallet.

No phone.

Only a small silver capsule.

The detective carefully opened it.

Inside was a tiny folded piece of paper.

Three typed words.

She remembers everything.

Emma looked toward Margaret.

Margaret's face had turned pale.

Not from illness.

From fear.

Real fear.

After the fake nurse was taken away, Collins closed the hospital room door.

Two uniformed officers remained outside.

"No one enters without my authorization."

Margaret nodded gratefully.

Then she looked at Emma.

"I've run out of time."

Emma pulled her chair closer.

"What do you mean?"

Margaret took a slow breath.

"For thirty-nine years..."

"...I've kept one promise."

She looked toward Daniel.

"And now..."

"...I have to break it."

Daniel's shoulders stiffened.

"Mom."

"No."

Margaret gently shook her head.

"Frank asked you to protect Emma."

"He didn't ask you to carry this alone forever."

Emma leaned forward.

"What promise?"

Margaret closed her eyes.

"When Catherine disappeared..."

"Everyone believed Arthur had lost his sister."

"But Arthur knew better."

Emma frowned.

"How?"

"Because..."

Margaret's voice trembled.

"...he helped her disappear."

The room became silent.

Even Mason looked surprised.

Emma blinked.

"What?"

Margaret nodded slowly.

"Arthur arranged everything."

"The fake accident."

"The false death certificate."

"The new identity."

Emma couldn't process it.

"Why would he do that?"

Margaret whispered,

"Because someone else was hunting her."

Mason immediately asked,

"Who?"

Margaret hesitated.

Then answered.

"A man named Victor Sloane."

The name meant nothing to Emma.

But not to Mason.

His expression changed instantly.

"No..."

Daniel looked at him.

"You know him?"

Mason slowly nodded.

"Victor Sloane disappeared twenty-seven years ago."

"He was suspected of corporate espionage."

"And?"

"Three witnesses vanished before the trial."

Emma felt a chill run down her spine.

"Vanished?"

"They were never found."

Margaret reached beneath her blanket.

She removed a worn leather notebook.

"I've written everything I remember."

Emma carefully accepted it.

The first page contained a single sentence.

The wrong man became the villain.

Emma looked up.

"What does that mean?"

Margaret answered quietly.

"It wasn't Arthur who destroyed your father's life."

Emma stared.

"It was Victor."

Across town...

Arthur Holloway stood alone in his office.

The city skyline glowed beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows.

A young assistant entered.

"Sir."

Arthur didn't turn around.

"They failed."

"Yes."

"And Margaret?"

"Still alive."

Arthur sighed.

"I was afraid of that."

The assistant hesitated.

"Should we leave the country?"

Arthur smiled faintly.

"No."

"Why not?"

Arthur picked up an old framed photograph.

Frank.

Margaret.

Catherine.

Himself.

All smiling.

"I'm tired of running."

Emma spent the afternoon reading Margaret's notebook.

Each page unraveled another piece of history.

Victor Sloane had once worked as chief financial officer for the original software company.

He handled every contract.

Every stock certificate.

Every bank account.

When Frank left to care for his dying father overseas...

Victor forged documents.

Transferred ownership.

Stole intellectual property.

Then disappeared.

Arthur had tried to stop him.

Frank had believed Arthur responsible.

By the time the truth emerged...

It was too late.

The company had already been sold.

Victor had vanished.

Friendships had been destroyed.

Lives had been rewritten.

Emma looked up.

"So Dad was wrong?"

Margaret nodded sadly.

"He never knew."

Daniel sat quietly in the corner.

Emma finally looked at him.

"You knew this?"

He shook his head.

"No."

"You didn't?"

"I knew Frank suspected he might have been wrong."

Emma frowned.

"Suspected?"

"He never had proof."

Emma closed the notebook.

"So everything we've believed..."

"...was based on a lie."

Just then...

Collins entered the room carrying a laptop.

"Our forensic team restored part of Lily's deleted voicemail."

Emma stood immediately.

"Play it."

The detective clicked a file.

Static.

Then Daniel's voice.

"Lily..."

Another burst of interference.

"...don't meet him alone..."

Static again.

"...Emma can never know until..."

The recording cut off.

Silence.

Emma slowly looked at Daniel.

"You were trying to warn her."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"About Arthur?"

"No."

Emma frowned.

"Then who?"

Daniel answered with two words.

"Victor Sloane."

The room became completely silent.

Emma whispered,

"He's alive?"

Before Daniel could answer—

Someone knocked once on the hospital door.

An officer opened it cautiously.

"There is a visitor."

Collins frowned.

"I said no visitors."

The officer looked confused.

"He insists."

"Who?"

The officer handed Collins a business card.

She read it once.

Then twice.

Her eyes widened.

She silently passed it to Emma.

The card read:

Victor Sloane

Attorney at Law

Emma felt her heart stop.

"That's impossible."

Collins looked toward the hallway.

"He says..."

She swallowed.

"...he's here to clear Arthur Holloway's name."

Daniel slowly stood.

"No."

Mason instinctively moved between Emma and the door.

Collins rested one hand on her holstered weapon.

Outside the room...

An elderly man in an immaculate navy suit waited calmly with a walking cane.

He looked nothing like a fugitive.

Nothing like a criminal.

He simply smiled politely.

May you like

And said,

"I believe you've been looking for me."
