Chapter 18 - THE TRIAL

Beatriz refused a plea agreement.
She believed a jury would see a wealthy husband punishing an unfaithful wife.
Her attorneys focused on my money.
My travel.
My long absences.
My authority over the household.
They suggested I created an impossible standard.
They suggested Isabella’s chores had been normal.
Then Marta testified.
She described the laundry basket.
The missed meals.
The threats.
Then Lucia testified.
Then the driver, Rafael, was finally found in Valencia.
He had left Marbella because Mateo threatened to accuse him of theft.
Rafael confirmed seeing Mateo enter the villa overnight repeatedly.
He confirmed Beatriz dismissed staff while payroll continued.
The financial experts followed.
Five million euros diverted.
Twenty million euros of land targeted.
Forged digital certificates.
False contracts.
Then the kitchen video played.
Mateo telling Isabella that her father had important work.
That she should not make trouble.
I watched Beatriz.
She did not look at the screen.
Then Isabella’s therapist testified about coercive control and the effects of repeated threats.
Isabella did not testify in open court.
I would not allow her to become a spectacle if the law provided another option.
Her recorded forensic interview was enough.
Then came Mateo.
He described the fraud.
The affair.
The school application.
The plan to leave Spain.
Finally the prosecutor asked,
“Why did Mrs. Moreno make the child perform household labor?”
Mateo stared at his hands.
“At first because staff were gone.”
“And later?”
“Because Isabella saw us.”
“So?”
“Beatriz wanted her afraid.”
A silence filled the courtroom.
“Afraid of what?”
“Losing her father.”
I closed my eyes.
That was the real weapon.
Not garbage.
Not chores.
Not hunger.
Abandonment.
Beatriz had taken the worst fear of a child who had already lost her mother and used it to control her.
The jury deliberated for two days.
Beatriz was convicted on multiple fraud, forgery, conspiracy, and child mistreatment-related counts.
Mateo received a reduced sentence because of cooperation.
Carlos Vega faced separate corporate fraud charges.
Dr. Vidal lost her professional license after disciplinary proceedings.
Money was recovered.
The Estepona land remained ours.
People congratulated me.
I hated that.
There was nothing victorious about discovering the person sleeping beside you had terrorized your daughter.
The only victory that mattered was waiting outside the courthouse.
Isabella stood beside Marta holding two ice creams.
She handed one to me.
“Chocolate.”
she said.
“Your favorite.”
I smiled.
“You remembered.”
May you like
She shrugged.
“You’re not the only one who knows things.”
