Chapter 3: The Confession

Caleb never raised his voice.

He didn't need to.

He grabbed Dr. Vance by the front of his expensive coat and slammed him against the hospital wall with enough force to rattle the framed artwork.

"What did you give her?" Caleb demanded, his voice low and deadly.

"Tell the surgeon exactly what it was, or you won't need a hospital—you'll need a morgue."

Dr. Vance struggled to breathe.

His terrified eyes darted toward the exit.

"It... it was tetrodotoxin," he stammered. "A synthetic derivative. It slows the body's metabolism until it appears clinically dead."

"Why?"

Caleb pressed his forearm harder against the doctor's chest.

"It wasn't my idea!" Vance cried. "Arthur made me do it!"

Tears streamed down his face.

"Sarah's uncle. If she and the baby died, he inherited the entire estate. He paid me two million dollars to poison her tea. He told me she'd simply fall asleep."

His voice cracked.

"I have the antidote. It's in my medical bag."

Caleb shoved him toward the surgeon.

"Give it to him."

"Now."

The surgeon snatched the vial and sprinted back into the operating room.

At that exact moment, Caleb noticed someone quietly slipping through the hospital's revolving front doors.

Arthur.

The same man who had stood at the wake holding a glass of scotch.

Caleb took off running.

He burst through the entrance just as Arthur stepped onto the rain-soaked sidewalk.

With one powerful tackle, Caleb drove him face-first onto the wet concrete.

Arthur struggled wildly, but Caleb pinned him down and twisted his arm behind his back.

"You're going to spend the rest of your life behind bars," Caleb growled.

Hospital security rushed outside and quickly took Arthur into custody.
