Chapter 4: First Breath

Three hours later, the storm had finally passed.

The first light of morning painted the sky in deep shades of violet and gold.

Caleb sat quietly beside Sarah's hospital bed, watching the steady rhythm of the heart monitor.

The room smelled of antiseptic and fresh linens.

Nothing like the overpowering scent of funeral lilies that had filled the mansion only hours earlier.

Sarah's color had returned.

The ghostly gray that had made her look lifeless was gone.

Her breathing was slow... steady... real.

At last, her eyelids fluttered open.

She squinted against the bright lights until her eyes found Caleb.

"Caleb?" she whispered, her voice barely audible.

He leaned closer, releasing the breath he'd been holding all night.

The wall of strength he'd forced himself to maintain finally crumbled, replaced by overwhelming relief.

"I'm here," he said softly. "You're safe now. It's over."

Her hand instinctively moved to her stomach.

It was flat beneath the hospital blanket.

Fear instantly filled her eyes.

"My baby..."

The door opened.

A smiling nurse entered, gently pushing a clear hospital bassinet.

Inside lay a healthy newborn boy wrapped snugly in a soft blanket.

His rosy cheeks glowed as his tiny fists waved through the air.

"He's a fighter," the nurse said warmly. "Just like his mother."

Caleb carefully lifted the baby from the bassinet and placed him into Sarah's waiting arms.

The infant let out a small, determined cry.

Sarah held him tightly against her chest as tears streamed down her face.

Caleb wrapped both of them in his embrace, resting his forehead against hers.

The nightmare had finally come to an end.

And their new life had just begun.
