Chapter 9 - THE TRIAL OF BONNIE WHITMORE
Bonnie’s case went to trial first.
She wore a navy suit and used a cane.
Her attorney described her as an aging grandmother manipulated by Leonard Price and an unstable daughter.
The prosecution played the recordings.
Use places under her clothes.
Fear is how we reach it.
The dosage was controlled.
Each sentence removed another layer of respectability.
Mrs. Kennedy testified.
Bonnie’s attorney attacked her memory.
Mrs. Kennedy admitted she had waited too long.
Then she looked at the jury.
“Waiting made me ashamed.”
“It did not make the video false.”
Dana testified about Gracie’s disclosures.
Doctors described the injuries and medication.
Federal agents explained the kidnapping.
The Coast Guard released footage of the burning boat.
Bonnie watched everything without remorse.
She testified against legal advice.
She claimed Gracie had behavioral problems.
She said Caroline lacked discipline.
She said I undermined motherhood by spoiling the child.
The prosecutor asked whether spilling water justified a spinal injury.
Bonnie answered.
“It was not about the water.”
“What was it about?”
“Control.”
The word came out before she could stop it.
The courtroom became silent.
The prosecutor stepped closer.
“Whose control?”
“Parents must control children.”
“Did you control Caroline?”
“I guided her.”
“Did you control Leonard?”
“We had an agreement.”
“Did you intend to control Gracie’s trust?”
Bonnie’s face hardened.
“That money belonged to the family.”
“It belonged to Gracie.”
“She is a child.”
The prosecutor looked toward the jury.
“That was the entire opportunity.”
Bonnie was convicted of kidnapping, child-abuse conspiracy, poisoning, fraud, identity theft, witness intimidation, and attempted custodial interference.
She received fifty-eight years.
Before sentencing, she looked at Caroline.
“You betrayed me.”
Caroline stood behind the defense barrier under guard.
“No.”
“I finally stopped obeying you.”
Bonnie turned toward me.
“You think you won?”
I looked toward the empty seat where Gracie might one day have sat.
“This was never supposed to be a competition.”
Bonnie was taken away.
Leonard Price pleaded guilty and received thirty-one years after helping recover stolen assets and locate other children.
Judge Howard Price was removed from office and convicted of obstruction.
Dr. Martin Whitmore lost his medical license and received twelve years.
The network collapsed.
Caroline’s trial remained.
