Chapter 3: The House Remembers

Detective Harris ordered everyone to step away from Edward.

Paramedics rushed inside and lifted him carefully onto a stretcher. As they checked his pulse and blood pressure, Edward reached for Clara’s hand.

“I tried to protect it,” he whispered.

Clara squeezed his fingers.

“I know.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“No. You don’t. There’s more.”

Before Clara could ask, Vivian laughed.

It was small at first.

Then sharp.

“You think an old signature will save you?” she said. “You think a few police officers can undo what I built?”

Clara turned.

“What you built?”

Vivian’s face twisted.

“I kept this family alive. Margaret was weak. Edward was useless. And you—” She looked Clara up and down. “You were a sentimental little girl who didn’t know how power worked.”

Nathan stepped beside his mother.

“Stop talking,” he muttered.

But Vivian was too angry now.

Too proud.

Too certain that money would still protect her.

“I did what had to be done,” she said.

The detective’s eyes sharpened.

Clara went still.

“What did you do, Vivian?”

Vivian smiled.

Then Nathan grabbed her arm.

“Mother.”

Clara noticed it.

Fear.

Not arrogance.

Real fear.

Detective Harris noticed it too.

She turned to one officer.

“Search the private study.”

Vivian’s face changed instantly.

“You need a warrant.”

Harris lifted a document.

“We have one.”

The mansion grew silent.

The officers moved through the hallway toward Edward’s private study.

Vivian stood frozen.

Ten minutes later, they returned carrying a locked metal box.

Nathan cursed under his breath.

Clara recognized the box.

It had belonged to her mother.

One officer placed it on the marble table.

Detective Harris opened it with a key found inside Edward’s coat pocket.

Inside were letters.

Medical records.

Bank transfers.

And a small black flash drive.

Clara’s heartbeat slowed.

Detective Harris connected the drive to her tablet.

A video appeared.

Margaret Vale, pale and weak, sat in the same study twelve years ago.

Her voice trembled, but her eyes were clear.

“If anything happens to me,” Margaret said on the screen, “look at Vivian.”

Clara covered her mouth.

Edward wept silently from the stretcher.

Margaret continued.

“She has been changing my medication. I found the records. I changed my will because I know Clara will be the only one strong enough to save this family.”

Vivian whispered, “No.”

On the screen, Margaret looked straight into the camera.

“My daughter is the rightful heir. And Vivian Vale is not to be trusted.”

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

Then Detective Harris turned to Vivian.

“Vivian Vale, you are under arrest for elder abuse, assault, fraud, and suspicion connected to the death of Margaret Vale.”

Nathan stepped back.

“Mother, what did you do?”

Vivian looked at him.

And in that moment, Clara understood.

Nathan had helped steal the estate.

But even he had not known everything.

May you like

Vivian had not only stolen a house.

She had stolen a life.
