Chapter 14 - The Verdict
The jury deliberated for two days.
George was convicted of identity theft, forgery, bank fraud, insurance fraud, medical billing conspiracy, attempted real-estate fraud, and attempted murder.
The medical-fraud convictions included enhancements because vulnerable adults had been endangered.
Emily pleaded guilty under her cooperation agreement.
She received five years in prison, followed by restitution and supervised release.
Dr. Lang received seven years.
The unlicensed employees received lesser sentences depending on their knowledge.
George received twenty-nine years.
At sentencing, Linda spoke.
She did not ask the judge to release him.
She described her own participation.
“I spent years believing keeping the family together was the kindest thing I could do.”
“I now understand I was keeping the system together.”
“My daughters paid for that system.”
George looked at her with contempt.
“You would turn against your husband for applause?”
Linda flinched.
Then she continued.
“I am not asking Sophia to forgive me.”
“I am asking the court not to confuse my fear with innocence.”
Emily spoke next.
She apologized to patients.
To lenders.
To Sophia.
Her apology did not request a specific sentence.
That made it more credible.
Sophia declined to recommend punishment.
She read a statement about impact.
“My father stole more than money.”
“He turned my professional name into a tool.”
“He made my home feel temporary before I had moved into it.”
“He made my family’s love sound like an invoice.”
“I do not ask the court to punish him because he was a bad father.”
“I ask the court to sentence him for crimes supported by evidence.”
George stared at her.
“You will regret this when no one is left.”
Sophia looked at him.
“I was already alone at your table.”
“The difference is that now I know it.”
The judge imposed sentence.
George continued talking as deputies led him away.
The courtroom doors closed on his voice.
Sophia did not feel victorious.
Her credit remained damaged.
Patients had been harmed.
Her relationship with her mother was fractured.
Her sister was going to prison.
