Chapter 17 - The Fall of the Varric Empire

Aldo’s arrest shattered the criminal alliances surrounding the Varric family.

Men who had remained silent for years began offering testimony.

Financial records connected Aldo to dozens of disappearances.

Luca Bellandi attempted to bargain.

He claimed Matteo had known everything.

Matteo responded by giving Rachel complete access to the family’s accounts.

The decision cost him millions.

It also exposed crimes committed under businesses carrying his name.

His attorneys warned that he could lose the entire empire.

Matteo looked through the office window at Elena holding Nico in the garden.

“Then let it fall.”

Elena entered after the attorneys left.

“You spent your life building those companies.”

“I spent my life building what Aldo designed.”

“Some of it is yours.”

“Then I will rebuild what deserves to survive.”

Matteo transferred every hospital and adoption agency connected to the Cradle network into a federal victim fund.

Properties purchased with illegal money were surrendered.

The Varric mansion itself was placed in a protected trust for the rescued children’s legal expenses.

Newspapers called it the collapse of a mafia dynasty.

Matteo did not correct them.

Liana found him burning Luca’s old staff records in the fireplace.

“You could go to prison,” she said.

“If the evidence proves I knowingly helped them, I should.”

“Did you?”

“I knew Aldo was dangerous.”

“I knew some shipments were illegal.”

“I told myself they carried money and weapons.”

“I never asked questions because the answers might have required me to become a better man.”

Liana considered him quietly.

“You cannot change what you refused to see.”

“No.”

“But you can choose what you refuse to ignore now.”

Matteo looked at her.

That sentence stayed with him when he entered the federal courthouse the next morning.

He testified for nine hours.

He named associates, routes and shell companies.

He admitted his own crimes without bargaining for immunity.

When he emerged, reporters surrounded him.

“Mr. Varric, are you still a mafia boss?”

Matteo stopped on the courthouse steps.

“No.”

“What are you now?”

May you like

He looked toward Elena, Nico, Liana and Samuel waiting beyond the cameras.

“A father trying to become someone his son will not fear.”
