Chapter 17 - VANESSA’S LAST BARGAIN

Vanessa Cross entered court wearing no designer heels.

Her attorney had advised against them.

She pleaded not guilty to the most serious charge but accepted responsibility for striking Emily.

Negotiations began.

The prosecutor wanted cooperation regarding Preston.

Vanessa wanted reduced exposure.

Emily was not consulted on the terms.

She did not ask to control them.

Justice was not supposed to be a revenge menu.

Still, when Samuel Crane requested permission for Vanessa to send Emily a written apology, Emily refused.

“I do not need it.”

Raymond looked at her.

“You are sure?”

“Yes.”

“What if she needs to say it?”

“That is for her.”

“I am not responsible for making her remorse feel complete.”

Raymond nodded.

Vanessa cooperated anyway.

She turned over her second phone.

That phone changed Preston’s case.

Thousands of messages showed the affair.

More important were messages about Emily.

PRESTON: SHE’S ASKING TOO MANY QUESTIONS.

VANESSA: THEN TELL HER.

PRESTON: NOT UNTIL AFTER DELIVERY.

VANESSA: WHY ARE YOU SO OBSESSED WITH AFTER DELIVERY?

PRESTON: BECAUSE THAT’S WHEN I CAN END THIS CLEANLY.

Another thread came a week later.

VANESSA: SHE LOOKED AT ME LIKE SHE KNOWS.

PRESTON: LET HER LOOK.

VANESSA: I DON’T LIKE BEING TREATED LIKE A SECRET.

PRESTON: YOU WON’T BE FOR LONG.

Then the message Emily found most chilling.

VANESSA: WHAT HAPPENS TO HER AFTER THE BABY?

PRESTON: SHE GETS HELP.

VANESSA: WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

PRESTON: IT MEANS SHE WON’T BE MAKING DECISIONS FOR A WHILE.

Emily stopped reading.

Raymond closed the folder.

“Enough.”

“No.”

“You do not need to torture yourself.”

“I need to understand what he believed.”

Raymond looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because I lived beside him.”

“I slept next to him.”

“I want to know how much of my life I misunderstood.”

Raymond sat quietly.

Emily continued reading.

Another message showed Vanessa asking whether Emily would know about the trust.

Preston replied.

SHE DOESN’T UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH CONTROL HER MOTHER LEFT HER.

Vanessa asked.

AND YOU DO?

Preston answered.

I MARRIED HER.

Emily stared at those three words.

I married her.

Not I love her.

Not she trusts me.

Not we built a life.

I married her.

As though marriage itself were a transaction granting access.

She closed the file.

“That is enough.”

Raymond did not say he had told her so.

He knew better.

Vanessa also produced audio from the night before the hospital incident.

Preston sounded angry.

“My father is moving records.”

Vanessa asked.

“What records?”

“Old Saint Claire files.”

“Why?”

“Because Emily’s mother almost destroyed him.”

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“Your family is insane.”

Preston responded.

“You have no idea.”

Then Vanessa asked.

“Did your father kill her?”

There was a pause.

Preston answered.

“I don’t think he ordered it.”

Emily listened carefully.

Vanessa asked.

“What does that mean?”

Preston said.

“I think he told Vale to scare her.”

“And Vale made sure she never got to the meeting.”

Raymond stopped the recording.

Emily looked at him.

“Play it.”

“Emily.”

“Play it.”

He did.

Vanessa asked Preston how he knew.

Preston answered.

“I found a photograph in Dad’s safe years ago.”

“Vale in the garage.”

“My father looked terrified when he caught me with it.”

The photograph Preston sent Emily had not been discovered during the current crisis.

He had known about it for years.

Emily’s face went cold.

“He knew my mother’s death was suspicious.”

Raymond nodded.

“And he married me anyway.”

“Yes.”

“And he never told me.”

“No.”

Emily felt a new wave of nausea.

Preston had held her during anniversaries of Eleanor’s death.

He had stood beside her grave.

He had watched Emily cry.

All while knowing his own father had hidden a photograph connecting himself to Martin Vale that night.

That betrayal was somehow more intimate than the affair.

Vanessa’s cooperation revealed one last thing.

Preston had never intended to remain with her permanently.

A draft agreement on his laptop proposed paying Vanessa six hundred thousand dollars in exchange for a confidentiality contract after Emily’s delivery.

Vanessa had been a tool too.

A willing one.

A cruel one.

But still a tool.

When Samuel showed her the document, Vanessa reportedly stared at it for a long time.

Then she said only one sentence.

“He was going to throw me away.”

Samuel answered.

“Yes.”

Vanessa began to cry.

For the first time, Emily felt no satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

People who treated others as objects eventually discovered they were objects to someone else.

The same day, prosecutors charged Preston with conspiracy related to fraudulent medical records, obstruction, unauthorized access, and financial crimes connected to Crescent Ridge.

The custody and proxy issues would generate separate proceedings.

Gordon faced financial charges and an expanding investigation into Eleanor’s death.

Martin Vale faced the most serious exposure.

Daniel Kessler entered witness protection pending trial.

Nathaniel continued negotiating.

Patrick Wynn began cooperating.

The empire was collapsing through paperwork.

Not gunfire.

Not screaming.

Emails.

Invoices.

Access logs.

Contracts.

Records.

The exact things powerful people assumed ordinary people would find too boring to examine.

Emily’s mother had understood that fifteen years earlier.

That evening, Emily stood in the nursery.

Preston had painted the walls pale green.

A wooden crib waited beneath the window.

Tiny clothes filled drawers.

Emily touched one blue sleeper.

For the first time since the hospital hallway, she cried without stopping herself.

She cried for the marriage.

For her mother.

For the child who had been turned into a financial trigger before he even took his first breath.

For the version of Preston who once cried at the ultrasound.

Maybe that man had been real for a while.

Maybe he had loved her.

Maybe greed had grown slowly.

Emily realized she no longer needed the answer.

A person could once have loved you and still become someone you must leave.

Her phone rang.

It was her divorce attorney.

“We are ready to file whenever you are.”

Emily looked at her wedding ring.

She removed it.

The skin beneath was pale.

“I’m ready.”

The petition was filed the next morning.

Preston received it in a secure interview room.

His attorney watched him read.

He reached the custody section.

Emily requested sole temporary physical custody after birth, subject to court-determined supervised contact based on ongoing investigations.

Preston slammed the paper onto the table.

“She cannot do this.”

His attorney looked at him.

“She just did.”

Preston stared at the petition.

May you like

Then he whispered something that revealed what still mattered most to him.

“What happens to the trust now?”
