Chapter 4: Full Circle

The moving truck waited quietly in the driveway.

Cardboard boxes were stacked beside the garage exactly where Avery's own belongings had once been left years before.

Some ironies required no explanation.

She stood near the sidewalk in a charcoal wool coat, hands tucked inside the pockets, watching without expression.

The house looked smaller now.

Or maybe she'd simply grown beyond it.

Her parents carried the last boxes toward an aging sedan parked behind the truck.

The spacious home they'd once guarded so fiercely would soon belong to someone else.

They were leaving for a cramped two-bedroom apartment across town—the only place they could afford after the sale.

Leo passed within a few feet of her.

His arms wrapped around a cardboard box.

His eyes never lifted.

The brother who had destroyed her life couldn't even bear to face her now.

Finally, her father stopped beside her.

His shoulders sagged with defeat.

"Avery..."

His voice cracked.

"We were wrong."

She said nothing.

"We believed Leo. We never questioned him. We should have listened to you."

He looked toward the house one last time before turning back.

"Please."

"You can't do this to your own family."

Avery studied the man standing before her.

Once, his voice had terrified her.

Once, a single disappointed look from him could leave her in tears.

Now...

She felt nothing.

Not hatred.

Not revenge.

Not satisfaction.

Only peace.

"When you forced me to leave this house ten years ago," she said quietly, "you told me my survival wasn't your problem anymore."

The words settled over the driveway like winter snow.

She looked at each of them.

Her father.

Her mother.

Leo.

"Today," she continued, her voice calm enough to be almost gentle, "I'm simply returning the favor."

No one answered.

There was nothing left to say.

Avery turned and walked toward the front door.

The same heavy oak door.

The same brass handle.

The same porch where she'd once stood with a trash bag and nowhere to go.

This time, the key belonged to her.

She unlocked the door.

Stepped inside.

And closed it softly behind her.

Not out of anger.

Not out of revenge.

But because some chapters deserve an ending.

And this one finally had.
