Chapter 1 – The Report Sophie Was Never Meant to Read

Sophie Whitmore stared at the folded medical report in her trembling hands.

The room went silent.

Emily reached for it instinctively.

"Please... give it back."

But Sophie had already unfolded the last page.

Her face drained of color.

"No..."

Ryan finally looked up from his phone, annoyed more than concerned.

"What now?"

Sophie slowly turned the report toward him.

"Read it."

Ryan rolled his eyes.

"I don't have time for another one of her dramas."

"You will read it," Sophie said.

It wasn't a request.

For the first time in years, even Ryan heard authority in his mother's voice.

He grabbed the report.

His expression changed after the first line.

Then the second.

By the time he reached the diagnosis, the phone slipped from his hand.

Stage III Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Recommended immediate chemotherapy.

High-risk pregnancy.

Delayed treatment significantly reduces survival probability.

Ryan looked at Emily.

"What... what is this?"

Emily lowered her eyes.

"I found out six weeks ago."

"You've known this whole time?"

She nodded.

"The doctors wanted to begin treatment immediately."

Ryan frowned.

"So why didn't you?"

Emily smiled sadly and rested a hand on her stomach.

"Because chemotherapy would almost certainly kill our baby."

Silence.

The words struck harder than anyone expected.

Sophie staggered backward into a chair.

Ryan couldn't speak.

Emily had chosen to risk her own life...

To save the child everyone in this house treated like a burden.

Then Sophie noticed another page clipped behind the report.

It wasn't from the hospital.

It was from the insurance company.

CLAIM DENIED.

Reason: Coverage canceled by policyholder.

The policyholder's name was Ryan Bennett.

Emily stared at him.

"I never asked you why my insurance suddenly disappeared."

Ryan blinked.

"I... I never canceled anything."

But before anyone could answer...

Ryan's phone lit up again.

A message from Vanessa.

Everything is done. She'll never find out about the insurance. ❤️

Every face in the room turned toward Ryan.

He felt the blood leave his body.

Because suddenly...

May you like

He wasn't sure whether Vanessa had lied to him...

Or whether she'd just confessed to a crime.
