Chapter 3: The Secret Account

Emily couldn’t remember the last time she felt truly safe.
Not in the house she shared with Daniel.
Not in the bedroom where they had once planned their future.
Not even in the hospital room where Lily fought her battle.
Because now every memory had been poisoned by one terrible question:
How long had Daniel been lying?
Detective Mitchell sat across from her at the kitchen table while Lily rested on the couch nearby, watching cartoons with the volume turned low.
Emily kept looking at her daughter.
Every few seconds.
Just to make sure she was still there.
Just to remind herself why she had to stay strong.
“Mrs. Carter,” Detective Mitchell said gently, “I know this is overwhelming.”
Emily laughed quietly.
Overwhelming wasn’t the word.
Her entire world had collapsed in one night.
“My husband stole money meant for our daughter’s treatment,” she whispered.
The detective nodded.
“And we believe there may be more.”
Emily looked up.
“More?”
Detective Cole placed a folder on the table.
“We found evidence of another bank account.”
Emily frowned.
“Daniel has another account?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
The detective hesitated.
That hesitation frightened her.
“How much?” Emily asked again.
“Approximately $78,000.”
Emily stared.
Seventy-eight thousand dollars.
The number felt unreal.
“Where did it come from?”
Detective Cole looked at his notes.
“Several sources. Some from the fundraiser account. Some from personal transfers. Some from loans taken out in your name.”
Emily’s face went pale.
“My name?”
“Yes.”
She shook her head.
“No. That’s impossible.”
Daniel had always handled paperwork.
Bills.
Insurance.
Bank statements.
He told her she was too stressed with Lily’s illness and that he would take care of everything.
She had trusted him.
Because she was a mother trying to keep her child alive.
Detective Mitchell leaned forward.
“Mrs. Carter, did you ever sign documents without reading them?”
Emily swallowed.
“Yes.”
The admission hurt.
“He said they were hospital forms.”
The detective exchanged a look with her partner.
A look that said they already suspected the answer.
“What about the insurance policy?” Emily asked.
Detective Mitchell opened the folder.
“Daniel increased Lily’s coverage from $50,000 to $250,000.”
Emily felt sick.
“When?”
“Three weeks after her diagnosis.”
A cold silence filled the room.
Emily looked toward Lily.
Her daughter was smiling at a cartoon character, unaware that the man who was supposed to protect her had been making plans around her illness.
“How could someone do that?” Emily whispered.
Detective Mitchell didn’t answer immediately.
Because there was no simple answer.
Instead, she said:
“People who commit these kinds of crimes usually convince themselves they have a reason.”
Emily looked back.
“A reason?”
“They tell themselves they’re solving a problem. They create excuses until they stop seeing the person they’re hurting.”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
But she refused to cry.
Not now.
Not in front of strangers.
Not when Lily needed her.
A sudden sound came from the hallway.
Daniel.
He had been sitting in the living room with another officer watching him.
“Emily!”
His voice was desperate.
She turned.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Not angry.
Not arrogant.
Afraid.
“Please,” he said.
“I need to explain.”
Emily stood slowly.
“You had months to explain.”
“Emily, I made mistakes.”
“Mistakes?”
Her voice sharpened.
“You stole from your daughter.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No. I was trying to help us.”
She stared at him.
“Then why hide it?”
He had no answer.
“Why the other woman?”
Silence.
“Why the insurance?”
More silence.
Emily felt something inside her break.
The man standing in front of her was someone she had loved.
Someone she had defended.
Someone she had trusted with the life of their child.
And she finally understood.
The scariest monsters weren’t always strangers.
Sometimes they sat at your dinner table.
Sometimes they kissed you goodnight.
Sometimes they called themselves your family.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“There’s something you don’t know.”
Emily looked at him.
“What?”
His eyes moved toward Lily.
Then back to her.
“The insurance policy wasn’t the only thing I changed.”
Emily felt a chill.
“What else?”
Daniel hesitated.
And that hesitation told her everything.
“There was another document.”
Detective Mitchell stepped closer.
“Mr. Carter.”
But Daniel ignored her.
His eyes stayed on Emily.
“A document that could change everything.”
Emily’s heart started racing.
“What document?”
Daniel swallowed.
“The custody agreement.”
Emily froze.
Because suddenly she realized…
Daniel hadn’t just been preparing for Lily’s death.
May you like
He had been preparing for Emily to lose everything.
To be continued…
