CHAPTER 2 Emily's Final Letter

The front door opened.

Three men in dark suits entered first.

Behind them came a silver-haired attorney carrying a leather portfolio.

The room fell silent.

Even Ryan seemed unsure of himself now.

The attorney walked directly toward Lily.

Not me.

Not Ryan.

Lily.

He knelt slightly and offered a gentle smile.

"Miss Lily Carter?"

Lily nodded.

The attorney's expression softened.

"I knew your mother. She asked me to be here today."

Ryan forced a laugh.

"This is ridiculous. Whatever this is, let's get it over with."

The attorney stood.

Then his eyes moved to the shattered photograph lying on the floor.

His face hardened instantly.

"So the picture has already been broken."

Ryan crossed his arms.

"It was an accident."

Nobody believed him.

The attorney opened the leather folder.

Inside was a sealed document.

And beside it sat the envelope Emily had left behind.

"The late Emily Carter instructed that this letter be read exactly one year after her death."

He handed the envelope to Lily.

Her small hands trembled.

Slowly she opened it.

Inside was a letter written in Emily's handwriting.

The room remained silent as the attorney began reading aloud.

"If you are hearing this, then my daughter has survived her first year without me."

Several guests wiped tears from their eyes.

Lily stared at the floor.

"I know she is frightened. I know she misses me every day. But Lily, if you are listening, I need you to know something."

The attorney paused.

His voice grew softer.

"You were never my greatest responsibility."

Lily blinked.

"You were my greatest blessing."

A tear rolled down Lily's cheek.

The attorney continued.

"And to the person raising my daughter... thank you for loving her when I no longer could."

I felt my throat tighten.

Then the letter changed.

Its tone became serious.

"One final matter must now be addressed."

The attorney looked directly at Ryan.

Emily's next words hit the room like thunder.

"Any individual who mistreats, exploits, intimidates, or emotionally harms my daughter shall immediately lose any access to benefits connected to my estate."

Ryan's face drained of color.

The attorney wasn't finished.

"All witnesses present today shall be considered valid testimony."

Suddenly every guest understood why they had been invited.

Why the attorney had arrived.

Why Emily had waited exactly one year.

Ryan swallowed hard.

May you like

For the first time all afternoon, he looked afraid.

Very afraid.
