Chapter 3: Every Lie Was Being Recorded

Julian forced himself to laugh.

"You think this changes anything?"

Emily released him.

Not because she couldn't finish the fight.

Because she didn't need to.

She calmly walked toward the panoramic window overlooking Manhattan.

"I've waited two years for tonight."

Julian slowly stood, rubbing his wrist.

"You'll regret this."

"I don't think so."

She gently touched the diamond necklace resting against her collarbone.

Julian smirked.

"My wedding gift."

"No."

Emily looked directly into his eyes.

"My microphone."

His smile froze.

"What?"

"The diamonds aren't real."

She pressed a tiny hidden clasp.

A soft green light blinked beneath the center stone.

Julian stared at it.

His heartbeat became deafening.

"What is that?"

"A live transmitter."

Silence.

Then Emily spoke loudly enough for the empty room to hear.

"So tell me again, Julian."

She folded her arms.

"Tell me how you planned to have your wife committed after tonight."

His face turned white.

"You..."

"Go ahead."

She smiled.

"You've always loved hearing yourself talk."

Julian suddenly remembered every conversation...

Every threat...

Every confession...

Every detail he'd proudly explained during the last hour.

His knees nearly gave out.

The transmitter wasn't alone.

Emily reached into her bouquet lying beside the door.

Hidden inside the flowers was a miniature camera.

Its red recording light blinked steadily.

"You've been filming me?"

"No."

Emily shook her head.

"I've been documenting evidence."

Julian lunged toward her.

May you like

Too late.

The penthouse door burst open.
