Chapter 19 - Rachel’s Crime

Rachel did not speak until Emma had been removed from the courtroom.
Christopher insisted.
Whatever Theodore was about to confess did not belong in a seven-year-old’s ears.
Yvette took Emma and Leo to a protected room inside the courthouse.
Federal agents surrounded the floor.
Margaret was detained.
Rebecca remained under guard.
Juliette sat with Gideon.
Rachel stood alone near the witness table.
Christopher looked at her.
“What did you do?”
Rachel shook her head.
“Nothing that justifies Theodore protecting me.”
“Then why?”
“I don’t know.”
Christopher stared.
“Rachel.”
She looked at him.
“Seven years of lies.”
“One more and I walk away.”
The words hurt them both.
Rachel swallowed.
“I killed someone.”
Christopher froze.
Gideon stood.
“What?”
Rachel looked at her brother.
“The man who ordered the sedan to hit Estelle’s car.”
Christopher’s chest tightened.
“The intermediary?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Six years ago.”
Gideon stared.
“Who?”
“Peter Voss.”
Gideon’s face changed.
He knew the name.
Christopher remembered.
Voss had served as Pierce Foundation chief operating officer.
He disappeared years earlier.
News reports said he fled to Argentina after embezzlement accusations.
Rachel continued.
“I found him in Montreal.”
“He recognized me.”
“He tried to kill me.”
“I fought back.”
Christopher’s voice was quiet.
“How?”
“A knife.”
Gideon closed his eyes.
Rachel continued.
“I could have called police.”
“But I was legally dead.”
“I was afraid.”
“So I left.”
“Voss died.”
Christopher stared.
“That sounds like self-defense.”
Rachel shook her head.
“I went there armed.”
“Planning to confront him.”
“That can be used against me.”
“Especially if Theodore testifies I was hunting people.”
Christopher understood.
Theodore’s offer of immunity was leverage.
But why protect Rachel?
Judge Cole returned with federal prosecutor Elena Marquez.
Marquez addressed the room.
“Theodore Pierce has offered information regarding murders, financial crimes, bribery, trafficking, identity fraud, and conspiracy.”
Christopher felt the scope expanding beyond anything he imagined.
Marquez continued.
“He requests immunity for Rachel Monroe regarding the death of Peter Voss.”
“And?”
Christopher asked.
“What does he want in return?”
Marquez looked at him.
“Nothing.”
Christopher laughed.
“No.”
“Theodore never does anything for nothing.”
Marquez agreed.
“We asked.”
“He said he owed Rachel.”
Rachel stared.
“For what?”
Marquez opened a folder.
“Saving his life.”
Silence.
Christopher turned toward Rachel.
She looked equally confused.
“When did I save Theodore?”
Marquez answered.
“Twenty-eight years ago.”
Rachel shook her head.
“I was a child.”
“You were eleven.”
Rebecca suddenly began laughing.
Everyone turned.
Tears rolled down her face.
“I remember.”
Rachel stared.
“What?”
Rebecca looked at her twin.
“The lake.”
Rachel’s face changed.
A memory.
Christopher saw it arrive.
Rebecca continued.
“Theodore fell through the ice.”
Rachel whispered.
“No.”
“He told us not to go near the lake.”
“He went out anyway.”
Rachel covered her mouth.
“I pulled him out.”
Rebecca nodded.
“You crawled onto the ice.”
“You tied your scarf around his wrist.”
“You screamed until Margaret came.”
Rachel sat down.
Christopher stared.
Theodore had remembered.
For twenty-eight years.
Rebecca smiled bitterly.
“He always liked debts.”
Marquez continued.
“Theodore says he promised Rachel he would spare her once.”
Rachel laughed painfully.
“So his version of mercy is immunity after destroying my life.”
Rebecca whispered.
“That sounds like him.”
Christopher looked at Marquez.
“Take the deal.”
Rachel turned.
“No.”
Christopher stared.
“What?”
“I’m not taking immunity from him.”
“Rachel.”
“No.”
“If Peter Voss died because I killed him, I will testify.”
Christopher stepped closer.
“You acted in self-defense.”
“Then let a court decide.”
“Do not let Theodore purchase the ending.”
Christopher stared.
This was what none of his family understood.
Truth without control.
Accountability without bargaining.
Rachel looked at Marquez.
“I refuse immunity.”
Marquez nodded slowly.
“I’ll inform him.”
Rebecca smiled.
“Theodore will hate that.”
Rachel looked at her.
“Good.”
Federal agents took Margaret for questioning.
Rebecca requested to testify too.
Juliette agreed to plead guilty to charges relating to the pool incident.
Christopher looked at her.
“You understand what that means?”
“Yes.”
“You could go to prison.”
“Yes.”
Gideon stared at her.
Juliette looked toward the room where Leo waited.
“I want my son to know one person in this family admitted what she did.”
Gideon said nothing.
But his expression softened slightly.
Arthur joined by video from the hospital.
He confessed to the attempted poisoning during Rachel’s pregnancy.
He admitted conspiracy to conceal Theodore’s criminal networks.
He admitted faking his death.
He admitted moving assets secretly.
Christopher listened to his father destroy his own reputation sentence by sentence.
Arthur looked into the camera.
“I spent my life believing the family could only survive if someone controlled the truth.”
He paused.
“I was wrong.”
Christopher felt nothing resembling forgiveness.
But it was a beginning.
Jonathan negotiated his own cooperation.
Unlike Rachel, he wanted immunity.
He offered account numbers.
Judges.
Politicians.
Executives.
Margaret resisted until Rebecca testified.
Then something unexpected happened.
Margaret began talking too.
Not to save herself.
To destroy Theodore.
By sunset, prosecutors had enough information to open investigations across six states and three countries.
Pierce Industries shares halted trading.
News networks called it the largest family corruption scandal in modern corporate history.
Christopher did not watch.
He sat with Emma on the courthouse roof terrace.
She ate crackers from a vending machine.
“Are we poor now?”
Christopher looked at her.
“What?”
She shrugged.
“TV said our money is gone.”
Christopher smiled.
“Some might be.”
“All?”
“Maybe a lot.”
Emma thought.
“Can we still get pizza?”
Christopher laughed for the first time in days.
“Yes.”
“Then okay.”
He looked at her.
That simple.
Adults had murdered.
Blackmailed.
Hidden children.
Faked deaths.
Destroyed identities.
All for an empire.
Emma only wanted to know whether there would still be pizza.
Christopher kissed her hair.
Rachel stepped onto the terrace.
Emma ran toward her.
Christopher watched them embrace.
Rachel looked at him over Emma’s shoulder.
Uncertain.
He understood.
They did not automatically become a family because she was alive.
Too much had happened.
But they had time now.
Maybe.
Victoria entered.
Her expression was strange.
“Christopher.”
“What?”
“The DNA results came back.”
Gideon and Rachel.
Christopher looked at Rachel.
She held Emma tighter.
“And?”
Victoria swallowed.
“Rachel is biologically related to Gideon.”
Gideon appeared behind her.
Relief crossed his face.
“She’s my sister.”
“Yes.”
Everyone exhaled.
Then Victoria continued.
“But Rebecca is not.”
Silence.
Rebecca stood in the doorway behind Gideon.
Her face went blank.
“What?”
Victoria looked at the report.
“You and Rachel are not twins.”
Rebecca stared.
“That’s impossible.”
Rachel whispered.
“We look alike.”
Victoria nodded.
“But not genetically as sisters.”
Christopher felt another secret opening.
Rebecca laughed nervously.
“No.”
“Margaret said—”
Margaret’s voice came from behind the agents escorting her through the hall.
“I lied.”
Everyone turned.
Rebecca stared at her.
Margaret stopped.
Her expression was exhausted.
Rebecca whispered.
“Who am I?”
Margaret looked directly at her.
For the first time, all cruelty disappeared.
Only shame remained.
“You were Theodore’s daughter.”
Rebecca stopped breathing.
Christopher stared.
Theodore’s biological daughter.
Meaning Rebecca had not merely been raised by him.
He had turned his own daughter into Estelle.
Rebecca’s voice cracked.
“Who was my mother?”
Margaret looked away.
“Margaret.”
Rachel stepped closer.
“Who?”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Me.”
Gideon staggered.
Rachel covered her mouth.
Rebecca stared.
Margaret continued.
“Theodore and I had an affair.”
“I became pregnant.”
“He took you.”
“I told Daniel and Rachel you were their sister.”
Christopher’s mind reeled.
Rebecca was Rachel and Gideon’s maternal half sister.
Theodore’s daughter.
Christopher’s adoptive mother.
Juliette’s mother.
This family was even more tangled than anyone knew.
Rebecca began laughing.
Then crying.
Then both.
Margaret looked at her.
“I’m sorry.”
Rebecca stared.
“You gave me to my father.”
Margaret whispered.
“Yes.”
“And he erased me.”
“Yes.”
Rebecca walked toward her.
Agents moved.
She stopped inches away.
For one terrifying moment Christopher thought she would strike Margaret.
Instead Rebecca whispered.
“I spent my entire life thinking I was stolen from one family.”
She wiped her tears.
“Now I know I was given away by both.”
She walked out.
Nobody followed.
Christopher looked at Emma.
The child had heard only part.
Enough.
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Why do grown-ups lie so much?”
Christopher looked at Rachel.
Then Gideon.
Then Margaret.
Finally he answered.
“Because sometimes they’re scared the truth will cost them something.”
Emma frowned.
“Does it?”
“Yes.”
“What?”
Christopher looked toward the courthouse full of people finally facing consequences.
“Usually more when they wait.”
Emma thought about that.
Then nodded.
A federal agent stepped onto the terrace.
“Mr. Pierce.”
Christopher turned.
“Theodore Pierce has been moved to secure medical custody.”
“Good.”
“He asked to see you.”
“No.”
The agent hesitated.
“He said you would change your mind when you heard his message.”
Christopher stared.
“What message?”
The agent handed him a sealed note.
Christopher opened it.
Three handwritten lines.
CHRISTOPHER,
THE SPARROW FUND HAS ALREADY ACTIVATED.
ASK YOUR LAWYER WHAT HAPPENS AT MIDNIGHT.
Christopher looked at Victoria.
Her face went white.
“What happens at midnight?”
Victoria grabbed her phone.
She searched.
Then stopped.
“Oh my God.”
Christopher felt dread.
“What?”
She looked at him.
“At midnight, if the fund has been activated by Emma’s DNA…”
She swallowed.
“The entire Pierce voting structure dissolves automatically.”
Christopher nodded.
“Rachel said that.”
Victoria shook her head.
“No.”
“That isn’t the dangerous part.”
Christopher stared.
“What is?”
Victoria’s voice dropped.
“All confidential Pierce Foundation archives are scheduled for automatic public release.”
Christopher frowned.
“That sounds good.”
Victoria looked terrified.
“Not all of those files concern crimes.”
“Some contain witness identities.”
“Protected children.”
“People hiding from abusive families.”
“Government informants.”
“Medical records.”
Christopher’s chest tightened.
“How long?”
Victoria looked at the clock.
11:07 p.m.
Fifty-three minutes.
If they did nothing, Theodore’s empire would fall.
May you like
And thousands of innocent secrets would fall with it.
