PART 4 — THE CALL HE SHOULD NOT HAVE MADE

Marcus called her 27 times.

No answer.

Then finally—

She picked up.

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Jessica. What the hell did you do?”

A pause.

Then Jessica:

“I cleaned up your life.”

His voice cracked.

“You sold the house?! You emptied everything?! Are you insane?”

Jessica exhaled slowly.

“No,” she said. “I’m finally clear-headed.”

Marcus laughed nervously.

“This is because of some misunderstanding. We can fix this—”

Jessica interrupted him.

“I saw the hotel videos, Marcus.”

Silence.

Even the air on his side of the phone seemed to stop moving.

“I saw Tiffany receipts. I saw messages. I saw everything.”

Another pause.

Then Jessica, quieter:

“I even saw the way you wrote ‘I love you’ to her… in the same font you used for me on our wedding cards.”

Marcus swallowed hard.

“I can explain—”

“You don’t need to.”

Click.

Call ended.

For the first time in his life, Marcus realized:

He wasn’t in control anymore.
