Chapter 1: The Night of Public Humiliation

The room felt like it was shrinking.

Too many eyes.

Too much silence.

The servers stood frozen, trapped between helping and losing their jobs. The band had stopped mid-note. Under the crystal chandeliers, a heavy hush settled over the ballroom—not the kind that protects, but the kind that waits to see how ugly things will get.

Anna's hands trembled.

A splash of red wine stained the sleeve of Ethan Sterling's expensive designer suit. It had been an accident, nothing more. But in Ethan's eyes, it was an unforgivable offense.

"Please," Anna whispered. "I'll pay for the cleaning. I promise. I'll—"

"You'll pay?"

Ethan stepped closer. The sharp smell of alcohol filled the space between them.

"With what?" he sneered. "Your tips?"

A few guests laughed.

Not loudly.

Not courageously.

Just enough to remind Anna that nobody was on her side.

Ethan turned dramatically toward the crowd as if he were performing on stage.

"I guess they'll hire anyone these days. No standards left."

More laughter followed.

The kind that sided with wealth.

The kind that sided with power.

Anna lowered her gaze.

She wanted the floor to open beneath her feet and swallow her whole.

Ethan lifted his wine glass and held it inches from her face.

"Maybe the help should learn how to hold a bottle before touching expensive things."

Anna instinctively stepped backward.

But Ethan suddenly grabbed her wrist.

"Wait."

His smile widened.

"I've got a better idea."

A chill ran through Anna's body.

Something about his expression made her heart pound.

"You ruined my night," he said coldly. "My five-thousand-dollar suit. You need to learn a lesson."

Someone in the crowd muttered, "Come on, man..."

But Ethan wasn't listening.

He was enjoying every second of it.

Slowly, he pulled a sleek Swiss pocketknife from his pocket.

Anna's eyes widened.

"No..."

The tiny scissors unfolded.

"Hold still."

Snip.

The sound was barely audible.

Yet it shattered something inside her.

A lock of her hair drifted to the polished marble floor.

Then another.

And another.

"There," Ethan laughed. "Your hair for my suit. Fair deal."

The ballroom erupted with nervous chuckles.

Some guests looked away.

Others raised their phones higher.

Nobody stopped him.

Nobody helped her.

Anna felt her knees give way.

She collapsed onto the floor.

Humiliation wrapped around her like chains.

Her vision blurred with tears.

She grabbed a handful of napkins and began wiping Ethan's shoes.

Not because she wanted to.

Because humiliation does that.

It reduces your entire world to one desperate thought:

Make it stop.

The cameras kept recording.

The whispers continued.

The laughter lingered.

Then suddenly—

The ballroom doors opened.

A deep silence swept across the room.

The massive double doors swung wide.

A man entered.

He didn't rush.

He didn't shout.

He simply walked forward.

Yet somehow, people moved aside instinctively.

As if they sensed something changing.

Anna looked up through tear-filled eyes.

Her breath caught.

Matteo.

Her husband.

He had seen everything.

May you like

And now, he was walking toward them.

To be continued...
