CHAPTER 8: THE HALLWAY CONFRONTATION

Preston continued knocking.
“Claire, I just want to talk.”
Naomi whispered to the emergency operator while I backed away from the door.
Claire stood frozen near the bed.
“How did he find me?”
“Your phone,” Naomi said. “Turn it off.”
The handle moved.
Preston had a key card.
The lock flashed red, but he tried again.
“Claire, don’t make this worse.”
His voice changed on the final word.
The same controlled rage I had heard before he lifted the oak board.
Hotel security arrived before he could force the door.
Through the peephole, I watched two guards confront him. Preston smiled and claimed his wife had invited him.
Then he saw me.
The smile vanished.
“You.”
He lunged toward the door.
The guards restrained him as police officers entered the hallway.
Preston shouted my name.
“You’ve wanted this your entire life!”
I stepped into the doorway despite Naomi’s warning.
“Wanted what?”
“To take everything from me!”
“You hit an eight-year-old.”
“She ruined my wedding!”
“She was bleeding, Preston.”
“And you loved it!”
The hallway fell silent.
Even the officers stared at him.
Preston’s breathing became ragged.
He had spent his entire life protected from consequences. Now every locked door, every uniform and every witness felt like a personal betrayal.
“You were always jealous,” he said. “Mom and Dad knew I was the one who mattered.”
I looked at him and felt something unexpected.
Not fear.
Not even hatred.
Pity.
He was thirty-three years old and still measuring his worth by how completely our parents had failed him.
“They didn’t love you more,” I said. “They taught you that love meant never hearing no.”
His face twisted.
“Shut up.”
“They turned you into someone who thinks hurting a child is acceptable.”
“Shut up!”
“They didn’t make you special, Preston.”
I held his gaze.
“They made you dangerous.”
He broke free from one guard and charged.
The officers brought him to the carpet before he reached me.
This time, his bond was revoked.
As police led him away, he looked at Claire.
“Tell them Evelyn planned everything.”
Claire stared back at him.
Then she spoke clearly enough for the officers’ body cameras to record.
“Preston, you told me your father had arranged an accident for Evelyn if she refused to sign.”
My blood went cold.
Naomi immediately turned toward her.
“What accident?”
Claire’s lips trembled.
“I thought he was bluffing.”
“What accident?”
“Her car.”
I remembered the week before the wedding.
My brakes had begun grinding unexpectedly.
The mechanic told me a fluid line was loose.
He assumed it was ordinary wear.
Claire opened another message on her phone.
It was from Preston to my father.
