Chapter 2: The Price of Cruelty

Matteo stopped in front of Anna.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

The ballroom remained silent.

Anna tried to look away.

She couldn't bear for him to see her like this—humiliated, broken, trembling in front of hundreds of strangers.

But Matteo gently lifted her chin.

His eyes moved over the uneven strands of her hair.

The tears on her cheeks.

The napkins still clutched in her shaking hands.

Then he looked down.

At the locks of hair scattered across the marble floor.

Something changed in his expression.

Not anger.

Something colder.

Much colder.

"Ethan," he said quietly.

The room seemed to freeze.

Ethan forced a laugh.

"Look, man, she spilled wine on my suit. Things got a little out of hand."

"A little?"

Matteo's voice remained calm.

That calmness frightened Ethan more than shouting ever could.

"You assaulted my wife."

The words echoed through the ballroom.

Several guests lowered their eyes.

Others suddenly found the floor very interesting.

Because now there was no hiding behind jokes.

No hiding behind alcohol.

No hiding behind wealth.

What Ethan had done had a name.

And everyone knew it.

Ethan scoffed.

"Oh, come on. It's just hair."

Matteo slowly turned toward the guests.

"Did any of you stop him?"

Silence.

"Did any of you help her?"

Silence.

"Did any of you think that filming a woman being humiliated was more important than protecting her?"

Nobody answered.

The truth was uncomfortable.

They had watched because it was easier.

Because courage is often expensive.

And cowardice is usually free.

Matteo pulled out his phone.

One call.

That was all.

Within minutes, hotel security entered.

Behind them came the general manager.

The manager's face turned pale the moment he saw Matteo.

"Sir."

"Review every camera angle from tonight."

"Immediately, sir."

Ethan crossed his arms.

"You think security footage changes anything?"

Twenty minutes later, the ballroom screens lit up.

The footage played.

And the truth became impossible to deny.

Ethan had stumbled first.

Ethan had crashed into Anna.

Ethan had caused the spill.

The entire ballroom watched the evidence unfold.

Gasps spread across the room.

The accident had never been Anna's fault.

Not for a single second.

The guests who had laughed now looked ashamed.

Some quietly put away their phones.

Others slipped toward the exits.

But it was too late.

The recordings already existed.

The internet would see everything.

Including who laughed.

Including who stood by.

Including Ethan.

For the first time that night, fear appeared in Ethan's eyes.

And Matteo finally spoke the words Ethan never expected to hear.

"Your suit can be cleaned."

He pointed toward Anna.

"But dignity is harder to repair."

Then he turned to security.

"Call the police."

May you like

Ethan's confidence shattered.

And as officers entered the ballroom, he realized the night he thought belonged to him had become the beginning of his downfall.
