Chapter 4 – The Door That Stayed Closed

That night the house finally became quiet.
Not empty.
Peaceful.
Oliver had been admitted to the hospital with a severe respiratory infection.
The pediatrician looked at Mason with concern.
"If you'd waited until morning..."
"He could have developed pneumonia."
Mason felt the blood drain from his face.
Lena squeezed his hand.
Neither of them said anything.
They didn't need to.
Hours later Oliver's fever finally began to fall.
The little boy opened sleepy eyes.
"Daddy?"
"I'm here, buddy."
"Mommy too?"
Lena smiled through exhausted tears.
"I'm not going anywhere."
Oliver wrapped tiny fingers around both of their hands before drifting back to sleep.
For the first time in weeks...
He looked peaceful.
Outside the hospital room, Mason's phone vibrated.
Dozens of messages.
Relatives.
Family friends.
Everyone had heard Patricia's version of the story.
Then another notification arrived.
Security camera footage.
The entire weekend.
Patricia lounging on the couch.
Brianna ordering expensive meals.
Lena cleaning.
Cooking.
Holding a sick child while heavily pregnant.
Mason uploaded every unedited clip into the family group chat.
No explanation.
No insults.
Just the truth.
Within minutes...
The apologies started arriving.

Patricia's phone remained silent.
No one defended her anymore.
