Chapter 4 — One Envelope Changed Everything

That evening Daniel returned carrying a large manila envelope.

He placed it on the dining table.

"I've been meaning to show everyone this."

Margaret frowned.

"What is it?"

"Our closing papers."

She blinked.

"For what?"

Daniel slid several documents across the table.

The deed.

The mortgage.

The property records.

Only two names appeared.

Daniel Foster.

Emma Foster.

No one else.

Margaret stared.

"But..."

"I thought this was still your father's house."

Daniel shook his head.

"I bought it two years ago."

The room fell silent.

He continued.

"I let everyone stay here after Dad passed because I believed family should help family."

He paused.

"I never imagined family would repay kindness by treating my wife like hired help."

Margaret's face turned pale.

"You wouldn't throw us out."

Daniel looked toward Emma.

Then back again.

"I won't."

A small breath of relief spread across the room.

Until he finished.

"But I am asking everyone to leave by Sunday."

The relief disappeared instantly.

"This is our home!" his brother shouted.

Daniel answered quietly.

"No."

He rested his hand on Emma's shoulder.

"This is hers."
