Chapter 2 – The Empire Beneath the Empire

Three hours earlier...
While Marcus prepared for his gala, I had been sitting alone inside my father's library.
A room filled with leather-bound ledgers older than Marcus himself.
My father poured two cups of tea.
He never rushed.
Not even tonight.
"I warned you eleven years ago."
"I know."
"You wanted him to love you before he knew who you were."
"I believed he did."
Father nodded.
"He loved ambition."
He slid a thick folder across the desk.
Inside were hundreds of documents.
Trust agreements.
Corporate registrations.
Asset transfers.
Every hotel Marcus believed he had purchased...
had actually been financed by my family's private investment trust.
When Marcus was twenty-nine, drowning in debt after his first failed venture, no bank would touch him.
My father quietly did.
On one condition.
Marcus would believe outside investors financed everything.
Only I knew the truth.
Each expansion.
Each acquisition.
Each billion-dollar refinancing.
Every signature ultimately required authorization from me.
I never abused that power.
Not once.
Even after Marcus slowly changed.
Even after he stopped introducing me as his partner.
Even after he began calling me...
"just my wife."
I protected him.
Protected his reputation.
Protected the illusion.
Father looked at me.
"Why now?"
I smiled sadly.
"He humiliated the wrong woman."
"No."
Father shook his head.
"He humiliated the woman who kept him powerful."
That was the difference.
I wasn't taking revenge.
I was simply removing protection.

And once the shield disappeared...
Marcus would finally face the consequences of standing alone.
