CHAPTER 4: THE NIGHT THE HOSPITAL WENT DARK

The lights flickered once.
Then again.
Then half the maternity floor dropped into emergency red.
Nurses moved fast. Doors opened. Machines began switching to backup power with sharp mechanical clicks. Somewhere, a newborn cried.
Charles stepped toward Evelyn’s bed.
“We need security.”
Maria was already at the door. “I’ll call downstairs.”
But when she lifted the hospital phone, her face changed.
“No line.”
Evelyn pushed herself up, pain twisting her features.
“Rowan.”
Charles turned.
The NICU.
He ran.
For the first time in decades, Charles Burden ran without caring how he looked.
He tore through the hallway as alarms pulsed red across the walls. Nurses shouted for backup. A security guard lay near the stairwell, conscious but bleeding from the forehead.
At the NICU entrance, a man in a dark maintenance uniform stood with his hand on the keypad.
Charles stopped.
The man turned slowly.
He was not hospital staff.
Charles knew it instantly.
The man smiled.
“Mr. Burden. Marcus sends his regards.”
Charles looked past him through the glass.
Rowan’s incubator sat beneath the blue light.
Tiny.
Helpless.
His son.
The man reached into his jacket.
Charles did not think.
He hit him.
Not elegantly. Not powerfully. Not like a hero in a movie.
He hit him like a terrified father.
They crashed into the wall. The man cursed and swung. Pain exploded across Charles’s cheek. He stumbled, tasted blood, and lunged again.
The man’s hand closed around Charles’s throat.
“You should’ve stayed rich and stupid,” he hissed.
Then Maria appeared behind him with a fire extinguisher.
She swung it with both hands.
The man dropped.
Charles fell to his knees, gasping.
Maria stared down at the attacker, breathing hard.
“I hate night shifts,” she said.
Charles almost laughed.
Then police sirens wailed outside.
Jennifer had not only called Charles.
She had called the FBI.
By sunrise, Marcus Chen was arrested in his lakefront home while trying to destroy hard drives in his fireplace. Jennifer turned over years of files. Bribes. forged notices. illegal evictions. secret payments. And one signed order authorizing intimidation against Evelyn Marsh.
Sienna tried to distance herself.
It did not work.
Her father’s money was tied to three shell companies Marcus used to bury evidence. By noon, the gala was canceled. By evening, Burden Development Group’s stock collapsed.
And Charles Burden, once the most feared developer in Seattle, walked into a federal office and gave them everything.

Not to save himself.
To save what remained of his soul.
