Chapter 14 - Emery’s Choice

Emery entered the archive holding Salvatore’s hand.

Dante sat restrained against the wall.

He looked at her with hatred.

Salvatore positioned himself so she did not have to see him.

The countdown showed seven minutes.

Vittorio stood near the terminal.

He looked exhausted.

Marcello had been carried upstairs by paramedics.

He was alive.

Barely.

Carlo remained beside Dante.

Salvatore guided Emery toward the scanner.

“What do I do?”

Vittorio answered gently.

“Put your hand here.”

She placed her palm against the glass.

The system illuminated.

HEIR IDENTITY PENDING.

A small needle mechanism appeared.

Emery pulled her hand away.

“No.”

Salvatore looked at Vittorio.

“Blood sample.”

Emery hated needles.

Salvatore crouched.

“You don’t have to.”

Vittorio stared at him.

The archive countdown continued.

06:32.

Dante laughed.

“She has to.”

Salvatore turned.

“Say one more word to her.”

Dante smiled.

Carlo tightened his grip on Dante’s restraints.

Emery looked at the screen.

“What happens if I don’t?”

Salvatore refused to lie.

“Grandpa’s files disappear.”

“All of them?”

“Yes.”

“The things about my mommy?”

Salvatore’s chest tightened.

“Yes.”

Emery looked toward Isabella’s photograph displayed in one archive file.

“And Grandpa’s letters?”

“Yes.”

“And the bad things Uncle Dante did?”

“Yes.”

Dante snapped.

“I am not your uncle.”

Emery looked at him.

“Good.”

Carlo almost smiled.

Emery turned back.

“I’ll do it.”

Salvatore held her other hand.

The needle took a tiny sample.

Emery squeezed her eyes shut.

Then it was over.

HEIR IDENTITY CONFIRMED.

A final message appeared.

DOES THE HEIR ACCEPT THE FOUNDERS TRUST?

YES / NO.

Emery frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Everyone looked at Vittorio.

He answered.

“It means Grandpa left you something very big.”

“Bigger than the horse?”

Vittorio smiled.

“Much bigger.”

“Do I have to take it?”

“No.”

That answer surprised everyone except Salvatore.

Vittorio continued.

“You never have to take anything simply because our family says it belongs to you.”

Emery thought.

“What happens if I say no?”

“The trust eventually dissolves into charitable foundations.”

“And if I say yes?”

“One day, when you are older, you will help decide what happens to the companies and the money.”

Emery looked at Salvatore.

“Does Daddy help?”

“Yes.”

“Do you help?”

“If I live long enough.”

Emery frowned at him.

“You’re not allowed to die again.”

Vittorio laughed weakly.

“I’ll try.”

The timer reached 04:18.

Carlo pointed.

“Decision soon.”

Emery looked at the screen again.

Then at Dante.

Then at Vittorio.

Then at Salvatore.

“Can Grandma take it?”

“No.”

“Can Uncle Dante?”

“No.”

“Can Daddy?”

Salvatore answered.

“It would belong to you.”

Emery considered that.

“Can I help kids with it?”

Vittorio’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

She pressed YES.

The timer stopped.

ARCHIVE PURGE CANCELED.

SUCCESSION ACCEPTED.

Another message appeared.

WELCOME, EMERY DELUCA.

Dante stopped smiling.

For the first time, the reality became official in front of him.

A seven-year-old girl had just accepted the position he had built his life around stealing.

Not because she wanted power.

Because she wanted to help children.

Dante began laughing.

The sound was empty.

“You think this ends anything?”

Salvatore turned.

“It ends you controlling it.”

“You still need proof.”

The archive printer activated.

Documents began emerging automatically.

Vittorio smiled.

“Already prepared.”

Dante’s face changed.

Copies of wire transfers.

Corporate theft.

Surveillance logs.

Payments to Sofia’s pursuers.

Records from Saint Raven.

Medical files.

Communications with Dr. Crane.

Fake identification.

Security footage.

Everything.

Vittorio had designed the succession process to release the entire archive to outside trustees and authorities automatically.

Marcello’s betrayal could not stop it.

Dante’s fire could not stop it.

Even Vittorio’s disappearance had not stopped it.

The archive connected remotely to multiple secure servers.

A message appeared.

DISTRIBUTION COMPLETE.

Dante stared.

“To whom?”

Vittorio answered.

“Federal prosecutors.”

Dante’s face emptied.

“Tax authorities.”

“Financial regulators.”

“State police.”

“Three newspapers.”

Dante looked toward Vittorio.

“You sent this to reporters?”

Vittorio shrugged.

“I learned not to trust only lawyers.”

Carlo glanced toward the staircase where paramedics had carried Marcello.

“Fair.”

Dante’s anger returned.

“You destroyed the family.”

Vittorio looked at him.

“No.”

“I exposed what was already destroying it.”

Dante was taken away.

As police led him upstairs, he looked toward Emery.

She stood beside the archive terminal.

The DeLuca signet ring had been returned to her.

Dante stopped.

“That should have been mine.”

Emery looked at the ring.

Then at him.

“Grandpa put it in my horse.”

Dante’s face twisted.

Emery continued innocently.

“So I think he knew who it belonged to.”

Dante was dragged away.

Salvatore lifted Emery into his arms.

She rested her head against his shoulder.

“I’m tired.”

“I know.”

“Can we go home now?”

Salvatore looked toward Vittorio.

The old man smiled.

“Which home?”

Salvatore thought of the estate.

Francesca.

The ruined Christmas table.

Years of deception.

He looked at Emery.

“Ours.”

Vittorio nodded.

“That sounds good.”

They left Bellacqua at dawn.

News helicopters were already beginning to circle.

Dante’s arrest had leaked.

So had Vittorio’s survival.

By noon, the story was national news.

DELUCA PATRIARCH FOUND ALIVE AFTER ELEVEN MONTHS.

EXECUTIVE ARRESTED IN KIDNAPPING AND FINANCIAL CONSPIRACY.

SECRET SUCCESSION DOCUMENTS TRIGGER BILLION-DOLLAR TRUST BATTLE.

But the most explosive development came that afternoon.

Dr. Leonard Crane was found alive.

He had not been killed.

He had been hiding.

And he agreed to testify.

His first statement implicated Dante.

His second implicated Francesca.

His third shocked Salvatore.

Vittorio had not simply been drugged the night he disappeared.

Francesca had placed the medication in his drink.

She had not intended to kill him.

She intended to make him unconscious long enough for Dante to move him.

But without Francesca’s action, none of it could have happened.

When Salvatore heard, he sat silently beside Vittorio’s hospital bed.

His father watched him.

“You don’t need to choose between loving her and holding her responsible.”

Salvatore looked down.

“She did this to you.”

“Yes.”

“She did this to Emery.”

“Yes.”

“She helped Dante hurt Sofia.”

“Yes.”

Salvatore’s voice tightened.

“How do you speak about her without anger?”

Vittorio looked toward the hospital window.

“I have had eleven months to be angry.”

“And?”

“I discovered anger is very heavy when you are trapped in one room.”

Salvatore said nothing.

Vittorio continued.

“I will testify.”

“I will tell the truth.”

“I will never live with Francesca again.”

“I may never speak to her privately again.”

“But I will not spend what remains of my life allowing her choices to occupy every room in my head.”

Salvatore looked at him.

Vittorio smiled sadly.

“That is not forgiveness.”

“It is eviction.”

Salvatore almost smiled.

His phone rang.

Francesca’s attorney.

She wanted to speak with Vittorio.

Vittorio shook his head.

“Not yet.”

Salvatore declined.

Then another call came.

Carlo.

“We have a problem.”

Salvatore closed his eyes.

“What now?”

“Someone accessed one of the offshore accounts before the freeze.”

“How much?”

“Thirty-two million.”

“Dante?”

“He was already in custody.”

“Francesca?”

“Police custody.”

Salvatore looked toward Vittorio.

“Marcello?”

“In surgery.”

Carlo paused.

“That leaves someone else.”

Salvatore thought they had finally uncovered every layer.

They had not.

Carlo continued.

“The transfer was authorized using Vittorio’s biometric credentials.”

Vittorio stared.

“That’s impossible.”

Carlo answered.

“Unless Dante created a copy from the samples he took.”

Salvatore felt cold.

“Where did the money go?”

“That’s the strange part.”

“Where?”

“To an account opened twenty-seven years ago.”

“Whose?”

Carlo hesitated.

“Alessandro DeLuca.”

Vittorio went completely still.

Salvatore saw his father’s face change.

“What?”

Vittorio whispered.

“That account cannot exist.”

“Why?”

“Because Alessandro died thirty years ago.”

Salvatore almost laughed from exhaustion.

Then Vittorio said something that ended the laughter.

May you like

“I saw him die.”
