Chapter 2 — The Doctor Who Disappeared

The next morning, Clara woke up in a private hospital room.
Not the same hospital her father owned.
This one belonged to the state.
There were no marble floors. No luxury curtains. No nurses trained to smile whenever Richard entered the room.
Just white walls, quiet machines, and a detective sitting near the door.
Noah sat by the window.
“You stayed,” Clara said.
He looked up. “I promised my mom I would.”
Clara studied him. “Where is she?”
Noah looked down.
“She’s gone.”
The words landed softly, but Clara felt the weight behind them.
Noah explained everything.
His mother, Evelyn Hart, had once been a junior nurse at Ashcroft Medical Center. Three years ago, she discovered that Clara’s test results had been altered. She found payment records. Private transfers. A hidden contract signed by Richard and two doctors.
When Evelyn tried to report it, she was fired.
Then threatened.
Then accused of stealing hospital drugs.
Her career was destroyed overnight.
“She kept copies,” Noah said. “She said one day Clara would need the truth.”
Clara’s chest tightened.
“Why didn’t she come sooner?”
Noah’s eyes filled with pain.
“She tried.”
He handed Clara an old phone.
On the cracked screen was a video.
Evelyn Hart appeared in a dim kitchen, her face tired but determined.
“If you are watching this, Clara, then I failed to reach you in time. Your father did not just lie about your condition. He needed you helpless. Your tragedy made him untouchable. Every donation, every hospital wing, every camera flash — it all depended on you never getting better.”
Clara stopped breathing.
The video continued.
“There is one more thing. The doctor who signed the final report never disappeared. Richard has been hiding him.”
The detective stood.
“Do you know the doctor’s name?”
Noah nodded.
“Dr. Samuel Voss.”
The detective’s face changed.
Clara noticed immediately.
“What?”
The detective looked at her carefully.
“Dr. Voss was declared dead two years ago.”
Noah shook his head.
“My mother said he wasn’t dead.”
Clara gripped the blanket.
“Then where is he?”
Noah reached into his backpack and pulled out one final item.
A photograph.
A private rehabilitation estate in the mountains.

On the back, written in Evelyn’s handwriting, were four words:
He knows where Richard buried the truth.
