Chapter 1: Sirens in the Suburbs

The solid oak front door slammed shut so hard the sound echoed through the spotless foyer of the upscale home.
The cold night air met her face the moment she stepped outside, but she barely noticed it.
She walked down the perfectly trimmed stone driveway without looking back, each step calm and deliberate. She wasn't running. She wasn't angry anymore.
She had already made her decision.
Inside the house, silence settled over the family like concrete.
Richard stood frozen in the entryway, staring at the closed door. His jaw tightened as the confidence he'd worn for years began to crack.
"She's bluffing," he muttered, straightening the cuffs of his expensive shirt, trying to convince himself as much as everyone else.
His wife spun toward him.
"Is she?" she shot back. Under the bright kitchen lights, her emerald silk blouse suddenly looked washed out and lifeless. "I warned you! I told you she'd been watching the trust accounts!"
Their younger son slowly backed against the marble kitchen island, his face drained of color.
"Dad... what did she mean when she said the police were already listening?"
No one answered.
Then came the sound.
A distant siren.
Then another.
And another.
The neighborhood filled with the growing chorus until flashing red and blue lights spilled across the walls of the house.
Richard rushed to the front window.
Three police cruisers had blocked the driveway.
Several officers stepped out.
Down the street, sitting quietly behind the wheel of her sedan, his daughter watched the entire scene unfold through her windshield.
She picked up her phone, confirming the audio recording had successfully uploaded to the cloud.

Only then did she shift the car into drive.
Without a single glance in the rearview mirror, she disappeared into the night.
