Chapter 14 - THE PROMISE

Mary did not chase Ethan.
She was finished chasing explanations from men who had built their lives around secrets.
Instead, she gave the photograph to Detective Martinez.
Two days later, Ethan returned voluntarily.
He appeared at Mary’s office without a lawyer.
Daniel remained in the room.
Ethan placed his passport on the desk.
“I went to Vermont.”
“To see your father.”
“Yes.”
“You told me he was dead.”
“I thought he was.”
Mary stared at him.
“Stop.”
Ethan looked confused.
“Stop using technically true sentences to hide lies.”
He lowered his eyes.
Mary pushed the photograph toward him.
“What promise did you make before you met me?”
Ethan stared at the handwritten sentence.
Then he sat down.
“When I was eighteen, my father contacted me.”
“You said he abandoned you at twelve.”
“He did.”
“And then?”
“He told me the Bennett family destroyed him.”
Mary waited.
“He made me promise that one day I would take back what Thomas had stolen from him.”
“By targeting me.”
“Yes.”
“You already admitted that.”
“There was another part.”
Mary felt tired.
“What?”
Ethan looked directly at her.
“I was supposed to marry you.”
Silence filled the office.
Daniel’s expression hardened.
Mary did not move.
“Say that again.”
“My father believed marriage would eventually give me influence over the Bennett trust.”
“So our engagement was part of a plan that began before we met.”
“Yes.”
Mary looked toward the window.
She expected the revelation to break her.
Instead, something strange happened.
It freed her.
Every remaining question about whether she had been too harsh disappeared.
“Did you ever intend to go through with it for the plan?”
“At first.”
“How long is ‘at first’?”
“A year.”
Mary nodded slowly.
“And after that?”
“I loved you.”
“No.”
Ethan flinched.
“You may have developed feelings.”
“Mary.”
“But love without truth is possession.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
Mary continued.
“You wanted me, my company, and your revenge.”
“You convinced yourself that wanting all three was love.”
He had no answer.
Daniel quietly left the room.
Mary stood.
“What happened with Michael?”
“He asked me to help him escape.”
“From what?”
“Thomas.”
“Thomas is in custody.”
“My father says Thomas has evidence connecting him to Peter Hart’s death.”
“Does he?”
“Yes.”
“Then he should surrender.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“That’s what I told him.”
Mary studied him.
“And?”
“He threatened you.”
Mary’s face hardened.
“With what?”
“He said Rebecca Bennett’s Northstar agreement wasn’t the only document she created.”
“What other document?”
Ethan removed a photocopy.
It was a codicil to Rebecca’s trust.
Mary read it.
If authentic, it changed the inheritance structure of Bennett Holdings.
Thomas was not Rebecca’s only secret.
According to the document, Richard Bennett had another child.
A daughter.
And that daughter had equal inheritance rights.
Mary looked up.
“Who is she?”
May you like
Ethan whispered the name.
“Vanessa Hart.”
