Chapter 12 - THE MAN BEHIND THE DOOR

Police surrounded Charles Bennett’s home before sunset.

Dr. Mercer had been hiding inside a sealed basement room.

The room contained medication, cash, passports, and recordings of several wealthy patients.

Grace traveled there with Jonah.

She wanted to see the place where her father had hidden the man who stole her freedom.

Charles waited in the study.

His wheelchair faced the windows.

He looked older than he had in court.

Grace entered alone.

“You protected Mercer.”

Charles did not deny it.

“He protected this family for many years.”

“He tortured me.”

Charles turned toward her.

“I never told him to hurt you.”

“You paid him.”

“I paid him to keep you safe.”

Grace stared at him.

“Safe from whom?”

“From Beatrice.”

Charles revealed that Beatrice originally intended to have Grace killed.

She believed Grace knew too much about illegal surveillance contracts sold through Holloway Technologies.

Charles convinced Beatrice that locking Grace away would attract less attention.

He believed he had saved his daughter’s life.

“You could have gone to the police,” Grace said.

“And destroyed everything I built?”

“You destroyed me instead.”

Charles looked toward a framed photograph on his desk.

It showed Grace and Olivia as children.

“You always believed I preferred you.”

“Olivia believed it too.”

“I preferred success.”

The answer was brutally honest.

Charles said Grace had made him proud.

Olivia had made him nervous.

He pushed both daughters toward the roles that benefited him.

Grace became the respectable wife of a powerful man.

Olivia became the desperate daughter willing to do anything for approval.

“You turned us against each other.”

“I taught you to survive.”

“No.”

Grace moved closer.

“You taught us that love was something we had to earn.”

Charles looked away.

For the first time, he appeared ashamed.

Grace asked why Mercer was still hidden in the house.

Charles admitted he planned to help him leave the country.

Mercer possessed evidence against everyone.

If he testified, Charles would spend the rest of his life in prison.

“You deserve prison.”

“I know.”

Grace had expected denial.

The quiet answer surprised her.

Charles opened a drawer.

He removed a small digital drive.

“This contains every payment, every conversation, and every name.”

“Why give it to me?”

“Because Lily deserves a family without secrets.”

Grace took the drive.

Charles reached for her hand.

She pulled away.

“You are still my daughter.”

“You stopped being my father the day you signed those papers.”

Pain crossed his face.

Grace left the study.

Police arrested Charles and Dr. Mercer.

Outside, Olivia stood beside a transport vehicle.

She had been brought to identify Mercer.

The sisters faced each other beneath the fading sunlight.

Olivia looked at the drive in Grace’s hand.

“Dad finally chose you again.”

Grace stepped closer.

“This is not a victory.”

“It feels like one from where I’m standing.”

“You shot Beatrice to save Lily.”

Olivia’s expression softened.

“Do you think that makes me good?”

“No.”

“Do you think confessing makes me good?”

“No.”

Olivia nodded.

“At least you’re honest.”

Grace looked at the sister she had once protected.

“Why did you keep my letters?”

Olivia’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I read every one.”

Grace felt her chest tighten.

“I wanted to throw them away.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because they were proof that someone could love another person that much.”

The transport officer opened the door.

Olivia stepped inside.

Before it closed, she looked at Grace.

May you like

“Lily never stopped loving you.”

Then the door slammed shut.
