Chapter 6 – The Price of the Truth

Adrian ended the call from the U.S. Attorney's Office with his heart pounding harder than it ever had during a board meeting.

The investigator had been professional.

Almost courteous.

But one sentence echoed in his mind.

"Mr. Cole, we are not accusing you of a crime at this time. We are determining whether certain financial disclosures were intentionally misrepresented."

At this time.

Those three words offered little comfort.

By sunrise, Cole Dynamics headquarters was surrounded by satellite trucks.

Financial analysts debated the company's future.

Former employees gave interviews.

Social media was flooded with side-by-side photographs of Adrian and Evelyn under one question:

Who really built the empire?

The answer was becoming impossible to ignore.

For the first time in years, people weren't talking about Adrian's charisma.

They were talking about Evelyn's intelligence.

Inside her temporary office, Evelyn sat alone.

The room still carried Adrian's name on the door.

She hadn't asked for it to be changed.

Not yet.

Arthur Bennett entered carrying a cup of coffee exactly the way she liked it.

"No sugar."

She smiled faintly.

"You always remember."

"I've worked with you for eleven years."

He sat across from her.

"You know what everyone expects."

She nodded.

"They want revenge."

"And do you?"

Evelyn looked through the floor-to-ceiling windows at the city below.

"I wanted accountability."

"That's different."

Arthur studied her carefully.

"You could destroy him."

"I know."

"You control the voting shares."

"I know."

"You could remove every benefit he's ever had."

She sighed.

"I know."

Arthur smiled softly.

"And yet you're hesitating."

"I still remember the man who wrote that letter."

Meanwhile, Adrian sat in a conference room with two federal attorneys and his own legal team.

Boxes of financial records covered the table.

One investigator opened a file.

"Mr. Cole, we'd like to discuss the executive certifications you signed over the past four years."

Adrian adjusted his tie.

"I signed thousands of documents."

"Did you personally verify each one?"

He hesitated.

"No."

"Who prepared them?"

"Evelyn's department."

The attorney made a note.

"And after Ms. Hart stopped reviewing them?"

Silence.

Adrian understood the trap.

For years, Evelyn had quietly corrected errors before they became disasters.

After she withdrew from daily operations six months earlier, those safeguards disappeared.

Mistakes multiplied.

Risky investments increased.

Financial reports became... optimistic.

Not fraudulent.

But dangerously misleading.

The investigator closed the folder.

"It appears the company relied on Ms. Hart's oversight far more than anyone realized."

Even Adrian couldn't argue.

Later that afternoon, Vanessa arrived unannounced at Evelyn's office.

She looked exhausted.

The confidence that had filled the ballroom the night before was gone.

She stood silently for several moments before speaking.

"I owe you an apology."

Evelyn looked up from her desk.

"For humiliating you."

"For believing everything I was told."

"For never asking who deserved the credit."

Evelyn remained quiet.

Vanessa swallowed hard.

"I thought you stayed in Adrian's shadow because you were weak."

A painful smile crossed Evelyn's face.

"No."

"I stayed because I loved him."

The honesty stunned Vanessa.

"I don't expect forgiveness," she whispered.

"I came because I needed to know one thing."

Evelyn waited.

"Did Adrian ever love me?"

The room fell silent.

Evelyn answered with remarkable kindness.

"I think Adrian loved the version of himself he became when people admired him."

She paused.

"And somewhere along the way..."

"He forgot how to truly love anyone else."

Vanessa lowered her head.

Tears filled her eyes—not because she had lost a billionaire, but because she finally understood she had never really known the man she intended to marry.

As she quietly left the office, Arthur entered with another folder.

"This just arrived."

Evelyn opened it.

It contained a formal request from the Board of Directors.

They wanted her to become the next Chief Executive Officer of Cole Dynamics.

She stared at the document for a long moment.

Accepting it would secure the company.

Rejecting it would leave the future uncertain.

Before she could answer, her phone vibrated.

The caller ID displayed Adrian's name.

For the first time since the ballroom...

He wasn't calling to defend himself.

He was calling to ask for one final meeting.
