Chapter 17 - THE WOMAN EVERYONE UNDERESTIMATED

Margaret Bennett surrendered at noon.
She walked into the Cleveland FBI office carrying two grocery bags.
Inside the first were financial ledgers.
Inside the second was a handgun.
She placed both on the counter.
Then said one sentence.
“My husband has Luca Moretti.”
I arrived thirty minutes later.
Margaret looked twenty years older than she had at Christmas.
She stared at me.
“Claire.”
“Don't.”
Her mouth closed.
“You knew.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“Yes.”
“You knew Warren was my biological father.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Derek was my half-brother.”
Her face crumpled.
“Yes.”
I wanted to hate her.
I did hate her.
But there was something else.
Disgust.
Not just at her.
At an entire system where everyone excused silence by pointing toward somebody more powerful.
“Why did you let us marry?”
Margaret cried.
“Warren said Derek would eventually lose interest in you.”
I laughed bitterly.
“So incest was acceptable as long as the marriage ended?”
“I begged him to stop.”
“You always begged.”
I leaned closer.
“You never did.”
She flinched.
Good.
I was finished protecting adults from the consequences of accurate words.
Margaret wiped her eyes.
“I helped Daniel.”
“Rebecca said that.”
“I changed the bracelets.”
“I tried to save one child.”
“What about the others?”
She looked down.
“I was afraid.”
“Everyone was afraid.”
“So was I.”
“So was Rebecca.”
“So was my mother.”
“Fear explains what you did.”
“It does not make it harmless.”
Margaret nodded.
“I know.”
“Where is Luca?”
“My husband took him to the old St. Agnes building.”
I stared.
“The hospital?”
“A closed maternity wing.”
“Why?”
“Vittorio wants a meeting.”
“With whom?”
“Warren.”
“Derek.”
“Alessandro.”
“Carlo.”
“And me.”
“Yes.”
“What does Vittorio want?”
Margaret looked toward the observation window.
“An heir.”
I almost laughed.
“There are babies being kidnapped because an old criminal wants to choose an heir?”
“It isn't only that.”
“Then what?”
“The accounts.”
“Vittorio hid control of several trusts behind family lineage requirements.”
“Whichever branch proves legal descent can access money.”
“How much?”
Margaret whispered.
“More than nine hundred million euros.”
There it was.
Money.
Again.
The thing powerful men claimed was never the reason until it always was.
“Noah?”
“Not Vittorio's son.”
“Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“Me?”
“Warren's daughter.”
“So why do I matter to Vittorio?”
“Because Warren controls the American records that prove Daniel's identity.”
“And Warren wants?”
“Your cooperation.”
“With what?”
“To destroy the evidence linking him to the hospital.”
“Why would I cooperate?”
Margaret looked at me with unbearable sadness.
“Because he has Luca.”
“And Derek has someone else.”
My pulse stopped.
“Who?”
She said nothing.
“Margaret.”
Her eyes filled.
“Maya.”
The room vanished.
“No.”
“She is in Rome.”
“Gabriella—”
“Derek's people intercepted the transfer.”
I could not breathe.
My phone rang.
Rome.
Gabriella.
I answered.
She was hysterical.
“Claire.”
“Where is Maya?”
“I thought they were police.”
My knees collapsed.
Reynolds caught me.
“They had papers.”
“They knew Bellini's name.”
“They took her.”
I could not hear anything except blood rushing in my ears.
Then another voice came on the line.
Derek.
“Hi, Claire.”
Every part of me became still.
“Put Maya on.”
“Mommy?”
Her tiny voice broke me.
“Baby.”
“I want you.”
“I know.”
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Okay.”
“Listen to me.”
“You did nothing wrong.”
“Do you hear me?”
“Yes.”
“None of this is because of you.”
A sob.
“Okay.”
Derek took the phone.
“Touching.”
“I will kill you.”
The words left my mouth calmly.
Every agent in the room looked at me.
Derek laughed.
“There she is.”
“The Morettis are rubbing off on you.”
“What do you want?”
“Come to St. Agnes.”
“No police.”
I looked at Reynolds.
He was already writing instructions to the team.
“Derek.”
“Yes?”
“You know I am your sister.”
Silence.
For once, I surprised him.
“What?”
“Warren is my biological father.”
No response.
“He knew before we married.”
Derek's breathing changed.
“You're lying.”
“The DNA report is downstairs in your father's red-door house.”
“He knew.”
“No.”
“He let you marry me because he wanted control.”
“Shut up.”
The first crack appeared.
“He used you too.”
“Shut up.”
“You were never his partner.”
“You were another tool.”
“SHUT UP!”
The line went dead.
Everyone stared at me.
Reynolds exhaled.
“You just destabilized the hostage taker.”
“I know.”
“Was that intentional?”
“No.”
Then I stood.
“But I know Derek.”
“He is going to confront Warren.”
“And when he does, they will stop watching each other.”
I looked at the floor plan of St. Agnes.
“That will be our opening.”
For six years, the Bennetts had relied on me being frightened.
Quiet.
Ashamed.
Dependent.

They were about to discover what happened when the woman they deliberately weakened finally understood that none of their power had ever come from strength.
It came from everyone else's silence.
