Chapter Seven: The Bracelet Beneath the Ashes

The Pacific Ocean crashed against the cliffs below the beach house as Nathan Hayes unlocked the small black safe once again.

Morning sunlight spilled across the bracelet.

Dozens of diamonds shimmered around the antique gold band, but Nathan wasn't admiring its beauty.

He was calculating.

His phone buzzed.

Olivia.

He ignored it.

It rang again.

Finally, he answered.

"Where are you?" Olivia demanded.

"Somewhere you aren't."

"You promised we'd leave together."

Nathan smiled.

"I promised a lot of things."

"You can't keep the bracelet without me."

"I already have."

Olivia's voice turned cold.

"If you betray me, I'll tell the police everything."

Nathan chuckled.

"And they'll believe the woman drowning in debt?"

The line went silent.

Nathan ended the call.

He wrapped the bracelet in a cloth and walked outside toward an old stone fire pit overlooking the ocean.

There, he dug beneath a layer of cooled ashes.

A rusted metal box emerged.

He carefully placed the bracelet inside.

"If anyone comes looking," he muttered, "they'll search the house."

He buried the box again.

Then he drove away.

Detective Brooks was already thinking two steps ahead.

Nathan's disappearance had transformed the investigation.

No innocent man fled before police executed a warrant.

By noon, Brooks had obtained a warrant for the beach house.

Emily insisted on coming.

"You don't need to see this," Brooks warned.

"I do."

"You've been through enough."

Emily met his eyes.

"This nightmare started with me."

"It ends with me."

Brooks reluctantly agreed.

The beach house appeared abandoned.

Kitchen untouched.

Bedroom neatly made.

No sign of forced entry.

No bracelet.

The forensic team searched every room.

Nothing.

Brooks frowned.

"Nathan was here."

Emily wandered onto the back patio.

The salty breeze stirred memories she couldn't explain.

She looked toward the fire pit.

It had been cleaned recently.

Too recently.

She knelt beside it.

Among the ashes she found something tiny.

A melted corner of black velvet.

The same material used inside Victoria's jewelry box.

"Detective!"

Brooks hurried over.

Emily held out the scorched fabric.

"He burned something here."

Brooks examined the pit.

"Not burned."

He crouched lower.

"...buried."

Minutes later, officers uncovered the rusted metal box.

Brooks slowly opened the lid.

Inside lay the Carter Bracelet.

Untouched.

The diamonds sparkled beneath the afternoon sun.

Emily let out the breath she'd been holding for three days.

"It's over."

Brooks shook his head.

"No."

He stared at the bracelet.

"This only proves who had it."

"It doesn't prove who planned everything."
