Chapter 1 - THE OFFICER AT THE DOOR

The officer reached for the hospital-room handle just as my husband stepped into his path.

“My wife needs rest,” Daniel said.

His voice had changed.

The laughter was gone.

The confidence remained, but it had become thinner.

The officer looked at the identification badge clipped to Daniel’s belt.

“Are you Daniel Mercer?”

“Yes.”

“I need you to step away from the door.”

Daniel folded his arms.

“I’m her husband.”

“And I’m giving you a lawful order.”

My mother-in-law, Lorraine, moved closer.

She was still carrying the large brown purse she brought everywhere.

The metal tool she had sharpened that morning was probably inside it.

“This is unnecessary,” she said.

“Elena fell in the backyard.”

The second officer entered my room.

She was a woman in her early forties with tired eyes and a calm voice.

“My name is Officer Grace Holloway.”

“Are you the person who called?”

I nodded.

The cracked phone rested against my palm beneath the blanket.

“I have recordings.”

Daniel tried to follow her inside.

Officer Holloway turned.

“Stay in the hallway.”

“You can’t separate me from my wife.”

“Yes, I can.”

She closed the door in his face.

For the first time in years, there was a locked door between Daniel and me.

I began shaking.

Not because I was afraid he would enter.

Because he could not.

Officer Holloway sat beside my bed.

“Are you safe speaking with me?”

“Yes.”

“Did your husband cause your injuries?”

“Yes.”

“Did anyone help him?”

“His mother.”

I handed her the phone.

The screen was cracked from corner to corner.

The battery showed only nine percent.

“Months of audio are saved there.”

“Have you sent copies anywhere?”

“No.”

Her expression tightened.

“We need to preserve it immediately.”

She connected the phone to a portable evidence charger.

Then she opened the most recent recording.

Daniel’s voice filled the room.

Tie her tighter.

She always tries to move when she wants attention.

Lorraine answered.

Hit lower this time.

She needs to remember what happens when she brings shame into this house.

Officer Holloway stopped the recording.

Her jaw hardened.

Outside the door, Daniel raised his voice.

“You have no right to steal private property.”

The officer beside him answered.

“The phone belongs to your wife.”

Daniel struck the door once with his palm.

“Elena, don’t do this.”

My entire body flinched.

Officer Holloway noticed.

She stood and opened the door.

“Daniel Mercer, turn around and place your hands behind your back.”

His expression changed.

“For what?”

“Domestic assault.”

“Unlawful restraint.”

“And interference with emergency assistance.”

Lorraine stepped between them.

“You can’t arrest my son because a broken woman tells a story.”

Officer Holloway looked directly at her.

“We are not arresting him because of a story.”

May you like

She held up the phone.

“We are arresting him because he recorded his own confession.”
