Daniel's father cleared his throat.
"You've embarrassed our entire family."
Emma slowly looked toward him.
"No."
She reached into her purse.
"You embarrassed yourselves."
She removed a small digital recorder.
Jonathan pressed play.
The dining room filled with familiar voices.
Lauren laughing.
Daniel mocking Emma's inability to have children during their first years of marriage.
His mother calling her "replaceable."
Daniel telling another woman over the phone—
"She's too loyal to ever leave."
Every sentence echoed through the silent room.
No one interrupted.
No one denied it.
Emma lowered her eyes.
"For six years I kept believing people could change."
She looked toward Daniel.
"I wasn't waiting for love."
She paused.
"I was waiting for basic kindness."
Daniel finally found his voice.
"I never meant—"
She gently raised one finger.
"For once..."
He stopped speaking.
"...let someone else finish."
Jonathan opened the final folder.
"Mrs. Carter also retained private investigators."
Daniel closed his eyes.
He already knew.
Photos.
Hotel receipts.
Phone records.
Messages.
There was nothing left to explain.
