Chapter 12 - The Hearing

The courtroom was smaller than I expected.
Diane sat across from us in a navy suit.
No tears.
No shaking hands.
She looked composed.
Like the victim she had decided to become.
Her attorney described me as emotionally volatile.
He mentioned pregnancy hormones.
That irritated the judge.
“Counsel, pregnancy is not evidence of instability.”
Ryan squeezed my hand beneath the table.
Then Diane testified.
She cried at exactly the right moments.
She said she loved me.
She said she'd tried to welcome me.
She said my hostility escalated after I became pregnant.
Then our attorney played the doorbell recording.
Please stop.
Cry louder.
Diane's face changed.
Her attorney objected.
The judge allowed it.
Then came the login evidence showing the deleted camera footage.
Then the forged divorce signature.
Then Melissa testified.
“Aunt Diane wrote my statement.”
Diane stared at her niece.
Melissa looked terrified.
But she didn't stop.
“She told me Claire was stealing Ryan from the family.”
Our attorney asked, “Did you personally witness Claire assault Diane?”
“No.”
“Did you witness Claire threaten her?”
“No.”
Diane's petition collapsed in less than an hour.
The judge denied the protective order.
Then she looked directly at Diane.
“Based on the evidence presented, I am forwarding portions of this record to law enforcement.”
Diane's face finally lost its composure.
Outside the courtroom, she approached Ryan.
He stepped between us.
“Stay away from Claire.”
Diane stared at him.
“You think she won?”
“This isn't about winning.”
“You always were naïve.”
Ryan shook his head.
“You forged my wife's signature.”
“To save you.”
“You stole company money.”
Diane smiled faintly.
“Can you prove that?”
Ryan's expression tightened.
She knew about the missing archive box.
She knew about the transferred money.
She believed the trail was disappearing.
Then Diane looked at my stomach.
“Your father understood something you don't.”
Ryan went still.
“What?”
“Family survives because someone is willing to do ugly things.”
She turned away.
A detective was waiting near the elevators.
He approached her.
“Mrs. Carter, we need to speak with you.”
For the first time, fear crossed her face.
But before he could continue, my body suddenly tightened.
Pain cut through my abdomen.
I grabbed Ryan's arm.
“Ryan.”
He turned.
“What?”
Another pain hit.
Stronger.
Then I felt warmth rush down my legs.
The hallway disappeared behind Ryan's terrified expression.
May you like
“My water just broke.”
