Chapter 10: No Longer Afraid

On a bright spring morning, Skylar stood before a room full of women at a local domestic violence resource center. The faint scar along her left cheek had faded, but she no longer tried to hide it.
She held up the medical report from the day Derek attacked her.
"This piece of paper didn't save me," she said. "The decision to tell the truth did."
The audience sat in complete silence.
"Abuse doesn't always begin with violence," she continued. "Sometimes it starts with someone convincing you that your money is theirs, your voice doesn't matter, and your fear is normal. It isn't."
When the session ended, a young woman approached with tears in her eyes.
"I think I'm living the life you escaped."
Skylar gently squeezed her hand.
"Then today can be your first step out."
As she walked into the warm Miami sunshine, her phone buzzed with a notification that the final divorce decree had been officially recorded.
She slipped the phone into her purse, took a slow, steady breath, and walked toward the future she had built herself—one honest decision at a time.
