Chapter 1: The Boy Who Begged for His Arm

“Cut it off!”
Caleb Whitmore’s scream tore through the second floor of the Dallas mansion so violently that a silver tray crashed onto the hardwood floor outside his bedroom.
Rain hammered the windows.
Lightning illuminated the room.
And ten-year-old Caleb was on the floor trying to smash his cast against the bedpost.
His father, billionaire Grant Whitmore, grabbed him before he could do it again.
“Caleb!”
The boy sobbed uncontrollably.
“Please, Dad! Cut it off! Something’s inside! It’s biting me!”
Grant stared at the white cast.
The doctors had assured him everything was normal.
The fracture was minor.
The pain would pass.
Yet his son looked terrified.
Not dramatic.
Terrified.
Then Marissa appeared in the doorway.
Perfectly composed.
Perfectly calm.
The same way she had been for the past four days.
“Don’t let him damage the cast,” she said softly.
Caleb immediately pointed at her.
“She put something in it!”
For a split second, Marissa's expression changed.
A flicker.
Gone almost instantly.
But Ruth Bennett saw it.
And Ruth trusted what she saw.
For sixty-three years she had learned to recognize fear, grief, lies, and guilt.
Marissa had just shown her guilt.
Still, Grant couldn't see it.
Every explanation sounded reasonable.
Every accusation sounded impossible.
Until finally he made the mistake that would haunt him forever.
He tied Caleb's left wrist to the headboard.
The boy stopped struggling.
Stopped screaming.
Stopped begging.
Instead, he looked directly at his father.
“You picked her.”
The words struck Grant harder than a slap.
“I’m protecting you.”
“No,” Caleb whispered.
“You’re helping her.”
As thunder rolled across the Texas sky, Ruth watched the scene unfold.
And deep inside, she made a decision.
If nobody else would listen to Caleb—
She would.

Because something inside that cast was hurting him.
And she intended to find out what it was.
