CHAPTER 1 — Nobody Was Leaving

The silence after the final steel gate locked into place felt heavier than the sound that had caused it.

No music.

No laughter.

Only frightened breathing.

The ballroom, moments earlier filled with champagne and polite conversation, had become a cage.

My attacker finally looked around.

Every exit was sealed behind twelve-inch reinforced steel.

Every window had disappeared behind armored shutters.

The security cameras rotated simultaneously, their red lights blinking to life.

Someone pounded against the nearest door.

Nothing.

Another guest grabbed a chair and hurled it against the steel barrier.

The chair splintered.

The barrier didn't even vibrate.

"What is this?"

A senator shouted toward the ceiling.

"This is illegal!"

Before anyone could answer, the massive LED screen above the orchestra flickered.

Static.

Then...

My father's face appeared.

Richard Ashford.

Founder of Ashford Global Security.

Former Secretary of Homeland Protection.

The man newspapers once called the architect of the safest private facilities in America.

He wasn't smiling.

"Good evening."

His calm voice filled the ballroom.

"If you are hearing this, Protocol Black has been activated."

Whispers exploded across the room.

Protocol Black?

Nobody outside our family even knew those words existed.

Richard continued.

"This estate was never designed merely as a residence."

Images replaced his face.

Blueprints.

Cross-sections.

Hidden passageways.

Emergency lockdown systems.

Underground command centers.

"It was built twenty years ago as a secure evacuation facility for federal continuity operations."

Gasps spread across the ballroom.

The mansion...

was essentially a fortress.

Every guest slowly realized the horrifying truth.

Nobody—not even the governor—had authority to override the lockdown.

Then my father's image disappeared.

Security footage replaced it.

Only thirty minutes old.

Crystal-clear.

Every angle.

There I was.

Standing near the marble hallway.

Trying to leave.

Then...

Damian Cross grabbed my wrist.

Hard.

He slammed me into the marble wall.

The crack echoed through the speakers.

Women in the audience instinctively flinched.

Blood appeared on my lip.

Someone whispered,

"Oh my God..."

The footage continued.

Damian shoved me again.

He laughed.

His friends laughed.

Not one person intervened.

The camera zoomed closer.

Close enough to capture every word.

"Who's going to stop me?"

Damian sneered.

"Your daddy?"

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Then another recording began.

This one from five minutes later.

Damian threatening one of the waitresses.

His friends bribing security guards.

His mother instructing hotel staff to delete surveillance footage.

Every lie.

Every crime.

Every second.

Recorded.

Stored.

Protected.

The room slowly turned toward Damian.

May you like

This time...

No one laughed.
