CHAPTER 5 — THE MAN WHO STOPPED WAITING

Three days later, Lily was discharged into a private recovery suite.

Vincent arranged everything.

Security.

Doctors.

Privacy.

She hated all of it.

“You don’t own me,” she said weakly the first night.

Vincent stood near the window.

“I know,” he replied.

A pause.

“That’s the problem.”

She frowned.

“What does that mean?”

He turned slightly.

For the first time, his expression was not cold.

It was controlled anger.

“They didn’t just try to kill my son,” he said. “They tried to erase the only person who stopped it.”

Lily went quiet.

Matteo, sitting beside her bed, whispered:

“They came for me first…”

Vincent nodded.

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then Lily spoke softly.

“So they’ll come again.”

Not a question.

A statement.

Vincent stepped closer.

“They will.”

Another pause.

“And next time,” he added quietly, “they won’t miss.”

Lily looked at him for a long moment.

Then she asked the only question that mattered.

“What are you going to do?”

Vincent’s answer came without hesitation.

“I’m going to end whoever thought you were disposable.”

A beat.

Then, softer—

“And I’m going to make sure my son never learns what it feels like to lose the person who saved him.”

Outside, New York moved like nothing was wrong.

Inside that room, something irreversible had begun.

Not a rescue.

Not a recovery.

A war.
