Chapter 2: The Truth Hidden in the Flames
The ballroom was no longer a place of celebration.
Every guest stood in stunned silence as all eyes shifted between Mary, Elena, and the flash drive resting on the table.
Damian picked it up.
"What proof?" he asked.
Mary looked directly at Elena.
"Play it."
Elena's voice trembled. "Don't."
That single word told everyone more than she intended.
Damian handed the flash drive to the hotel's technician. Within seconds, security footage and scanned legal documents appeared on the giant screen.
The first file showed old court records.
Dozens of poor families had signed complaints accusing Elena's father of forging land ownership documents.
The second file revealed bank transfers to government officials shortly before the court ruled in his favor.
Murmurs swept across the room.
Then came the final video.
It was recorded twenty years ago by a neighbor's security camera.
The footage showed several men pouring gasoline around a small wooden house.
One of them was recognized immediately.
Victor Romano.
Elena's father.
The room erupted.
"No..."
Elena stumbled backward.
"I never knew..."
Mary's eyes never left hers.
"You were a child. I never blamed you."
Damian slowly turned toward Elena.
"Did you know any of this?"
Tears streamed down her face.
"I swear... my father told me those families were criminals. I believed him."
For the first time since they met, Damian saw genuine heartbreak instead of pride.
But the damage had already been done.
Police officers entered the ballroom.
Someone had already called them.
